Weekend racing round-up: Youth omnium, junior and under-23 road and BMX World Cup

Over the weekend, the Youth Omnium Series returned across the home nations, while the Tiverton Road Race saw junior open and junior and under-23 women compete in Devon.

Youth Omnium Series: Round 2

The second round of the Youth Omnium Series saw the under-16 and under-14 riders battle it out in Maindy, Herne Hill and Caird Park.

In Dundee, Melanie Rowe topped the female omnium table after winning the individual time-trial and elimination race and finishing second behind Lily-Ann Scott in the scratch. In the open category, Zack Lowe snatched the overall win with his scratch race win and a second place finish in the elimination behind Elliot Speedie. In the youth B categories, Katie Robertson and Josh McClune were crowned the winners before the hail stopped racing.

Albie Jones and Anna Lloyd had successful outings at London’s Herne Hill Velodrome, with both riders winning all their races to take the youth A omnium victory. It was the same story in the youth B races, with Esmee Bone and Asher Gray taking a clean sweep of victories to secure the overall wins.

The third round of the Youth Omnium Series takes place over the weekend of 18-19 May in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Carmathen and Preston Park.

Tiverton Road Race

Acting as the first round of the Junior and Under-23 Women National Road Series and third round of the Junior Open National Road Series, the Tiverton Road Races saw competitive fields in both categories.

In the women’s race, Rebecca Gardiner (Tofauti Everyone Active) stormed to the win ahead of Millie Jenkins (Liv Cycling Club – Halo Films) and teammate  Amelia Cebak (Tofauti Everyone Active). Theo Anderson (Team Inca) secured the junior men’s win ahead of Fensham Howes – MAS Design teammates Max Hinds and Elliot Rowe.

The next round of the junior men’s race will take place this weekend at the Isle of Man Youth and Junior Tour (4-5 May) while the second round of the junior and under-23 women’s round will be at the CAMS Yorkshire Classic on Sunday 16 June.

UCI BMX Racing World Cup, USA

The Great Britain Cycling Team rounded off their 2024 UCI BMX Racing World Cup campaign in Tulsa, USA over the weekend, with Beth Shriever, Kye Whyte and Emily Hutt securing top-10 finishes in the overall standings.

Shriever qualified for the final race in both rounds five and six, earning her a fourth place finish in the world cup standings, while Whyte picked up the team's best result of the weekend with fifth place in the round six final - securing him eighth in the world cup standings.

Hutt's points over the weekend also earned her fourth in the world cup, while Ross Cullen finishes the season in 11th, with Quillan Isidore and Paddy Sharrock in 28th and 39th respectively.

Attention now turns to the 2024 UCI BMX Racing World Championships in Rockhill, USA from Sunday 12 May.

BiketheRock, Stadt Heubach

Ella Maclean-Howell picked up victory in the UCI under-23 race at BiketheRock in Heubach, completing an excellent weekend for the Great Britain Cycling Team as they prepare for next month’s European championships.
