The 2014 UCI BMX Supercross will return to Manchester after the city played host to the event for the first time in April 2013.

“I am thrilled by the idea of competing in the world champion’s jersey in front of a British crowd."

Great Britain's Liam Phillips

Tickets will go on general sale at 11am this Thursday 31 October. The competition’s finals night last year was a sell out. The event was named as Manchester's Major Sports Event of the Year for 2013 at an awards ceremony in the city last week.

The first round of the 2014 BMX Supercross Word Cup will take place at the National Cycling Centre on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 April 2014.

The event is part of UK Sport’s Gold Event Series, which aims to bring 70 world class sporting events to the UK by 2019, and is also backed by British Cycling and Manchester City Council.

Spectators can expect to see adrenaline fuelled racing from the fastest riders on the planet across both days of the competition, with a change in programme to include Supercross motos (the standard racing heats format) as well as time trials on Friday evening for qualification for Saturday’s main competition.

Last year both time trial superfinals and supercross competitions were won by British athletes, Shanaze Reade and Liam Phillips - who went on to become world champion in New Zealand in July. As reigning champion, Phillips will wear the UCI rainbow stripes in April 2014.

Of the competition, Phillips said: “I am thrilled by the idea of competing in the world champion’s jersey in front of a British crowd. The competition itself will be tough, but I’ll put everything into repeating my success from last year and I’m looking forward to once again being able to race at my home BMX track in Manchester.”
