Elinor Barker took gold in the Individual Pursuit at the U23/Junior European Track Championships to round off a successful first day in Portugal for the GB Team. The Junior rider beat the German Anna Knauer by almost 3 tenths of a second to secure the gold and title of European Junior Individual Pursuit Champion.

The day started off well in the Junior Women’s 200m TT with Great Britain Development Programme rider, Danielle Khan qualifying in 6th place with a time of 12.011. Khan, a former Great Britain speed skating academy athlete, went on to beat Urszula Los of Poland in the 1/8 finals. In the quarter finals, Khan was overpowered by Spanish rider Mar Manrique Villena losing 2-0 putting her into the 5-8 final where she finally placed 6th overall.

Great Britain Olympic Development Programme Riders Jonathan Dibben, Sam Lowe, Chris Latham and Tao Geoghegan Hart finished off the evening by taking a silver in the Men’s Junior Team Pursuit. The team qualified second fastest in a time of 4:14.275, five tenths behind the Danish team for a spot in the gold medal final later that evening.

In the final, after an impressive opening kilometre by the British quartet of 1:05.790, which put them in the lead by over six tenths of a second after four laps, the Danish riders came back at them in the second kilometre to take lead with a two tenths of a second advantage. The Danish team remained in control for the latter half of the race taking the gold medal in a time of 4:12.195 with Great Britain settling for silver in a time of 4:13.816 after 4Km.

The action continues today with the women’s Junior Team Pursuit, men’s Junior Individual Pursuit as well as the Under-23 Team Sprint for both men and women. We will be reporting on all the action from Portugal in our daily round ups throughout the championships.
