Alison Grant was presented with the Points of Light award by Sports Minister, Helen Grant, for her contribution to creating the largest under-16 cycling club in the country. The presentation took place on the Tour de France Stage 3 finish line in London, whilst the caravan was travelling past.
Alison joined Hillingdon Slipstreamers Go-Ride Club in 1998 when club membership stood at 20, and now, 14 years later, the club boasts over 300 members. Alison, who is Club Chair and Club Welfare Officer to name two of her many roles at the club, is the latest recipient of the Prime Minister’s Points of Light award, which recognises outstanding individual volunteers, people who are making a change in their community and inspiring others.
British Cycling's director of coaching, education and development, John Mills, said: “We’ve seen a huge increase in the number of young people participating in cycling in recent years, and this would not be possible without a network of dependable and dedicated volunteers, whose efforts are essential to the growth of grassroots sport.
“It’s fantastic to see Alison's hard work and passion recognised at this level; it is testament to the continued commitment that she has shown not only to Hillingdon Slipstreamers Go-Ride Club, but to the sport as whole.”
At the heart of any Go-Ride Club is the development of its young members and Alison is a valuable role model for her successful contribution to the way that Hillingdon Slipstreamers is run. Alison has also been fundamental in raising the club’s profile, supporting children with special learning requirements, encouraging young teenagers to get involved with volunteering and helping young female riders to stay with the sport at a time when they would often drift away.
Alison said: “I am amazed I was considered for this award and quite overwhelmed, as the role I have at Hillingdon Slipstreamers Go-Ride Club is just one cog in a massive wheel of volunteers. We work together as a team doing the best we can for all our children to deliver an amazing, fun experience whilst learning to ride their bikes safely and well at whatever level they choose. I never tire of seeing smiling faces when children achieve their potential.”
Alison is the second cycling volunteer to receive the Points of Light award, following Molly Pattison earlier this year.
