This Sunday sees the first running for a long time of a stand alone Junior road race championships. The event is being organised by Spokes Cycles and held in Kennoway, Fife. It’s 100km over a tough course, so should provide some good racing.
If you fancy going along to have a look at the Scottish talent of the future, race headquarters is the Cotlands football pavilion, Leven Road, Kennoway.
Riders to watch in the race for the title has to be the inform pairing from Team ASL360 of Mark Stewart and Gavin Shuttleworth. Mark finished 2nd overall and Gavin 3rd in the recent Isle of Man junior international tour. Locally they finished 1st and 2nd respectively in the British Eagle road race with Gavin this time getting the better of Mark. Mark also just won the Peebles sprint town centre criterium.
They won’t have it all their own way though. Local boy Lewis Grieve has been steadily creeping up on them with a win and some top three places recently. He is sure to want to prove himself in his own clubs promotion. Also in with a shout will be the strong second year juniors, Tom Arnstein, Calum Foster and Scottish team captain Aidan Quinn.
The second years though will have to keep their wits about them to contain the enthusiasm of the super keen first year juniors. What they look out for in strength, they more than make up for in enthusiasm. The first years to look out for are the Perth United pairing of Hector Lancaster and Fraser martin who both rode a strong Isle of Man tour in support of the Scotland team along with Yorkshire based Scot Struan Mciness who rides for the RST racing team. Ythan CC’s Zak loney is also another strong rider who has a massively strong determination to win.
Also riding and someone who may well give the boys a shock is junior girl Louise Borthwick. Louise has been putting in some superb results lately in Scottish, British and international races.
Whoever gets the title, one things for sure, it’s going to be some exciting racing. So why not get yourself along and show them some support.
