Andy Tennant and Ollie Wood were crowned British Cycling National Madison Champions with a convincing win over pre-race favourites Alex Dowsett and Joe Holt as the Revolution Series opened in London on Friday.

Tennant and Wood, both part of the Great Britain Cycling Team, made the right moves at the right times while Dowsett's powerful surges were closely marked throughout the 200 laps at the Lee Valley Velodrome.

The sprints that Dowsett and Holt won were sandwiched between Tennant's and Wood's, and the race was won before the final sprint.

The Friday evening session of Revolution 46 Series 1 gave cycling fans hundreds of reasons to get on their feet and cheer on the global stars.

Olympic champions Laura Trott and Marianne Vos led a strong women's omnium field in the opening three events, the scratch race, the three-kilometre individual pursuit and the elimination race.

In the scratch race, Trott’s Wiggle-Honda teammate Elinor Barker helped to pin Vos on the sprinter's line in a perfectly timed tactical move. By the time a gap opened for Vos, Trott crossed the finish line and the crowd erupted.

Trott extended her lead in the pursuit later, merciless in her effort and if the event had gone on for another lap Trott would have made the catch.

The duo came head-to-head once more as the final two in the elimination race, Trott again getting the better of her Dutch rival in the final sprint to hold a 100% record in the event after day one.

In the men’s keirin, Lewis Oliva took the win after Juan Peralta had led heading into the final lap.

Loughborough University won the Varsity team pursuit challenge beating Glasgow in the final. In the bronze-medal match Southampton University asked what could have been as they beat Lancaster University by four seconds.

The first round of six in the series concludes on Saturday.
