British Cycling is pleased to today announce that its Independent Chair, Frank Slevin, will continue in post for a further three years until January 2024, as Brian Facer prepares for his first day as Chief Executive Officer on January 11.
Frank was appointed to the role of Independent Chair in January 2018, and during his first three years in post the organisation has: met or surpassed all of the recommendations of the Cycling Independent Review; overseen necessary and significant improvements to our medical governance and our approach to athlete welfare; implemented changes required by the Code for Sports Governance; and transformed its regional structure to enhance its support for the English regions.
In the past 12 months, Frank and the board have supported the organisation’s leadership team as they develop their plans for the coming years, with a keen focus on the recovery from Covid-19, tailored long-term plans to support each of the cycling disciplines, and making the organisation more diverse and inclusive at every level. Most recently, he secured the appointment of Brian Facer as replacement for departing CEO Julie Harrington.
British Cycling Independent Chair, Frank Slevin, said:
“It’s been a real privilege for both myself and the board to support the organisation through a period of significant change, be that in governance, the support we offer to the Great Britain Cycling Team or the ongoing challenge of Covid-19.
“While there is an immediate need to support the organisation through this difficult period, I know that there is some fantastic work in the pipeline to ensure that cycling doesn’t just recover but prospers in the years ahead, welcoming new people from different backgrounds into our sport and ensuring that the foundations are in place to support a vibrant domestic scene across the disciplines.
“With Brian set to take up his role as our new Chief Executive on Monday and a board strengthened considerably by new independent expertise, I am proud to extend my term as Chair and excited to see what we can together achieve.”
Senior Independent Director Marian Lauder MBE has also extended her term, committing to British Cycling for a further year until April 2022.
Marian joined the British Cycling board in April 2014, and along with chairing the Audit and Risk Committees was responsible for commissioning the Cycling Independent Review and shaping British Cycling’s response to it through production of the 39-point action plan; and provided expert guidance on how best to fully conform to the Code for Sports Governance. She has extended her term up to April 2022, at which point she will have served on the board of directors for eight years.
