British Cycling has today announced the five riders who will represent Great Britain at the UCI BMX Freestyle World Championships in Montpellier, France, from 4th – 8th June.
Charlotte Worthington, the 2019 European champion and bronze world medallist, has been selected to compete for the Great Britain Cycling Team in the elite women’s contest.
In the elite men’s contest, Declan Brooks, who won bronze in the 2019 world championships, Alex Coleborn, winner of the silver medal in the 2017 world championships, James Jones and Ben Wallace will all represent Great Britain.
Stephen Park, Performance Director for British Cycling said: “Great Britain Cycling Team’s BMX Freestylers have gone from strength to strength since they became part of our World Class Programme, and the progression we have seen from the riders as they take advantage of the support we are able to provide is impressive.
“This is the first international BMX Freestyle event since November 2019, and it will give the riders a chance to see where they are at against the competitors we can expect to see at the Olympics. The team have had a productive preparation period for this event, spending time in the USA on some world-class BMX ramps with their coach Jamie Bestwick.
“The date for this world championship event has been brought forward from October, and although it is never ideal to have only six weeks to plan for a world championship, it does provide an excellent opportunity for our riders to get one more high-profile contest under their belt before turning their focus to the Tokyo Olympic Games, where BMX Freestyle is set to make its debut.”
Charlotte Worthington said: ““I’m really excited to represent Great Britain at the World Championship this year and get back into the swing of competing! The whole team has put in a lot of hard work especially in the US and we’re excited to bring it all together!”
