British Cycling Tutor and founder of Cycle Sisters, Sarah Javaid, has been awarded an MBE for services to cycling in the King’s Birthday Honours List, while our CEO, Jon Dutton, has been awarded an OBE for his contribution to the sport of rugby league.
Sarah founded the Cycle Sisters cycling club in 2016 in Walthamstow, though the club has since broadened its activities across London and is now an affiliated British Cycling Community Group. Passionate about breaking down barriers to cycling for Muslim women, she is a trained Ride Leader, British Cycling Tutor and National Standards Cycling Instructor.
In recognition of the wider impact her work has had for Muslim women across London, Sarah’s MBE has been awarded for services to both cycling and the community in London.
Jon joined British Cycling in April after a successful tenure as CEO of last year’s Rugby League World Cup in England. In addition to delivering a record combined crowd number of 473,000 across its 61 matches, the tournament blazed a trail with its commitment to social purpose.
In total more than £30 million was invested in community projects across England through the event, more than 500 mental health workshops were delivered to 12,000 people, and the work of its international development programme to grow the game internationally spanned 13 countries.
Congratulations to both Sarah and Jon for their well-deserved awards.
