National Youth Omnium Championships

The final of the National Youth Omnium Championships saw the top 24 riders of each category from the series standings qualifying to take part in the finals and battle it out to be overall series national champion.

Erin Bootman (East Kilbride Road Club) won an incredible national title in a tight competition that came down to the final event in the Youth A girls’ category. Aggressive racing saw numerous attacks in the points race, with Evie Smith (Shibden Cycling Club) and Phoebe Taylor (ESV Manchester) attacking the pack. With numerous splits in the group, Abigail Miller (Clifton CC) tried to capitalise on a lull in the race and attacked, without luck. Smith held on to take second, while Miller finished in a commendable third place.

Henry Hobbs (Welwyn Wheelers CC) was crowned the winner in the Youth A boys’ category, just one week after claiming the national title in the National Youth Circuit Championships. Consistency was key throughout, with Hobbs winning two of the five events in a fierce battle with Rory Gravelle (Velo Myrddin CC) and Harrison Dainty (Cystic Fibrosis Race). Hobbs eventually moved clear overall, with minor placings in the sprint race enough to be crowned the national champion.

In the Youth B girls’ category, Katie Lawson (Secret-Training CC) was trailing going into the final race but managed to secure her fourth win out of the five events to take the national title. In the final race, Lawson gained points in each of the six bonus laps to storm to the lead ahead of Grace Upshall (Poole Wheelers) and Rose Lewis (Halesowen A & CC) in second and third, respectively.

Daniel Davies (Maindy Flyers) had a consistent day, winning the elimination race and placing well in the keirin and scratch race, to take the Youth B boys’ national title. Samuel Price (Beeston Cycling Club) can count himself unlucky after winning three of the five disciplines on the day but coming up just short in the points race, giving him the silver overall. Finlay Storrie (Maindy Flyers) had a storming points race which meant he finished third overall.
