Everyone at British Cycling was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of long serving volunteer Paul West.

Paul worked at British Cycling for 18 years before leaving in 2008, originally working out of the HQ in Kettering before the organisation relocated to Manchester in 1994. As a competition officer for road, track and disability cycling, Paul saw three world track championships, the Commonwealth Games and two Tour de France visits in his time at British Cycling.

He continued to be a stalwart in the cycling community in his retirement, particularly supporting disability and para-cycling events, thanks to his dedication and enthusiasm as a volunteer. He also volunteered at youth races and continued to compete himself for his local club Weaver Valley CC up until 2013.

British Cycling President, Bob Howden OBE, said:

“Paul was one of the longest serving members of staff British Cycling has ever had and we were all shocked to hear of his sudden passing. Cycling was Paul’s true passion, and he continued to show his love and care for the sport well into his retirement, and was pivotal in his passion for disability and para-cycling. Those that knew Paul will know that he lived for cycling, and he will be sorely missed by everyone in the cycling community.”

The thoughts of everybody at British Cycling are with Paul’s family and many friends within the sport at this incredibly difficult time.
