Youngsters Given Taste of Cycle Speedway
Posted: 4th April
70 young riders met up at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield last month as British Cycling and Sheffield Stars joined forces to host an exciting day of Cycle Speedway racing.
Local Go-Ride coach Kim Meadows and members of the Go-Ride club Sheffield Stars CSC teamed together to run the Go-Ride Racing Competition in the final week of March.
The morning session saw five primary schools (Watercliffe Meadows, Valley Park, Emmaus, Prince Edwards & Marlcliffe) compete for trophies and various Go-Ride goodies in a team speedway format. There was a separate girls and boys team competition with Watercliffe Meadows Primary school winning both the boys and girls team competition.
The secondary schools competition ran in the afternoon with three schools competing (Bradfield, Stocksbridge & High Storrs). It was a hard fought competition with the Stocksbridge girls easing their way to victory. However in the boys competition just one point separated Highstorrs and Stocksbridge, coming down to the final race, which saw Highstorrs boys take the overall win.
Kim Meadows, Go-Ride Coach for Yorkshire said of the day's action: "The work that the club has done with the schools in order to prepare them for the speedway format of racing and setup made a real difference to the level of ability.
"The day went really well but it wouldn't have been as successful without the help of Sheffield Speedway Stars coaches for giving up their day and supplying the bikes and clothing needed for speedway. Also thanks to EIS Sheffield for providing us with such a great facility to run the event. And thanks to Sport Unlimited for their prizes given to the secondary competition."
Rob Mahwood from Sheffield Stars CSC, said: "We always love getting involved in this kind of event. It was the first time some of the kids had taken part in cycle speedway and it was great to see them gain in confidence. We are hoping to get some new members into the club after this event."
There are plans to do another Go-Ride Race later in the year following the success of this format. For further details, contact the Go-Ride team at British Cycling at go-ride@britishcycling.org.uk or call 0161 274 2070
