Bradley Wiggins has scored a silver medal - Britain's second Time Trial World Championship podium in two years.

Beaten only by a superlative Tony Martin (GER), Wiggins' ride was his first ever road World Championship medal, with last years silver coming from David Millar.

In 2011, Millar suffered, passed early by a rampaging Martin and eventually finishing seventh in a race dominated by the late starters.

With rain falling before the start, the near-hour-long test against the clock was in danger of becoming decided by poor conditions, but the shower passed, leaving roads in perfect condition for the powerhouses of time trialling to showdown.

First to set the pace was Australian individual pursuit World Record holder Jack Bobridge, before Bert Grabsch tried to replicate his World Championship winning ride from 2008. Early on, all times were eclipsed by Martin and defending champion Fabien Cancellara, with Wiggins and Millar recording a conservative first split, fifth and eleventh respectively.

After halfway, Wiggins had moved into third and tantilisingly ahead of Grabsch, but in the final stages a mistake by Cancellara - visibly on the limit to try and defend his title, the Swiss crashed on a bend after several close-calls and forefeited his silver medal position.
