Event: 25 August 2013

The charity sportive follows some of Reg’s training routes from Bury, Lancashire. The route quickly leaves Tottington behind and follows countryside through Hawkshaw village and then a steep drop and short, steep climb brings you into Edgworth where a right turn at the crossroads starts the long but rewarding climb onto moorland.

Take it steady there are more hills to come, but this stretch gives great views to Winter Hill, the Ribble Valley and Bowland beyond.  A long downhill stretch clipping in and out of the outskirts of Blackburn and Darwin takes you eventually past Hoghton Tower before more undulations, mainly on country lanes, bring you to Brindle and the feed station at the 15th century Cavendish Arms next to the village church.

The second half includes more undulating country lanes heading towards Anglezarke and Rivington where again you see long views down the valley to the Lancashire Plain and you will skirt and cross the reservoirs before reaching the touristy Rivington and start the climb up onto Winter Hill.  There are panoramic views from the top stretching to the Fylde coast on clear days. An exhilarating drop off Winter Hill and more short climbs brings you to the northern edge of Bolton, but leave something in the tank because you have one last climb out of Bradshaw towards Affetside and then mostly downhill back to Tottington.

All the details about the two routes (26 and 50 miles) including maps and profile can be found at our website www.regharrissportive.co.uk.
