There was yet another excellent turnout of riders for Round 7 of the South West Summer Series at Decoy with 224 entries. Once again the weather held good and racing was fast and furious with a few fallers but no serious injuries. Tiverton's Billy Cox took top honours in the Novice 6 and Unders with four straight wins including the A Final ahead of clubmate Joseph Varndell.
Cornwall's Liam Bridger won two of his motos but in the A Final was beaten home by Decoy's Jack Sharpe, who had won all his motos earlier, with another local lad Ross Draper in second place. In Novice 10-12 the moto wins were well spread so it was anyone's guess who would come out on top in the A Final, that honour eventually falling to Bideford's Will Hutchens from Decoy's Joel Hammon Crossen. Another Decoy rider took the A Final win in a combined 13-16+ class with Chris Draper heading home Cornwall's George Johnstone.
Jack Hawkins from Bath was unbeatable in the 6 and Unders ahead of Exeter's Aaron Peake whilst in the 7s Exeter's Freddie Cole was dominating the group from Duchy Pirate's Jack Nation. Ben Saunders from Burnham held reign in the 8s winning the A Final from Decoy's Finlay Smith-Jones. Tiverton's Ryan O'Loughlin netted the 9s A Final from Exeter's Willow Peake whilst in the 10s it was the turn of Cornwall's Alex Diment to take all the wins ahead of clubmate Daniel Commons-Lomax. Burnham's Josh Coppin was another rider clean sweeping the afternoon to romp home ahead of Decoy's Emily Green in the 11s. Josh Caddy from Cornwall and Burnham's CJ Tye had both had good moto results but in the 12s A Final it was Josh who took the coveted top honours from CJ. Burnham's Liam Brown had a couple of poor results in earlier motos but redeemed himself with a fine win in the A Final from Cornwall's Tyler Caddy in the 13s.
In the 14s it was all about Decoy's Tom Novis and Burnham's Roy Jones as they both won all their motos and were head to head in the A Final with Tom coming out the winner. Duchy's Matt Roddis led home Exeter's Louis Machin in the 15s whilst in the 16s it was Bideford's Daniel Jury who excelled from Decoy's Arron Shurmer. In the 17-24s, the back-on-form Ben Clarkson from the Duchy Pirates took the A Final win from Decoy's Jason Fay and in the combined 25-29/Masters group Bideford's Michael Smart led Exeter's David Brooks home.
Molly O'Loughlin from Tiverton won all her races in a combined 6 & Under/7-8s group ahead of Burnham's Tali Tye. Exeter's Georgina Martin led home Cornwall's Megan Wherry in the 9-10s and Burnham's Alesi Tye had it all her own way in 11-12s leading Tiverton's Shannon Blake across the line. Duchy's Lauren Shaw Sands owned the 25+ Females with Cornwall's Katy Kemp, riding 13-14s, mixed in with the group to finish second place.
The cruiser groups saw Burnham's Roy Jones win outright in a combined 9-14s group ahead of Exeter's Charlie Leggett whilst in the 15-16s it was anyones race as the four riders, all from Cornwall, battled it out, with Peter Kemp winning the group from Nathan Bache. Bideford's Brian Jury beat local rider Liam Fielding to the win in 17-29 and Bath's Clive Hawkins held off the challenges of Decoy's Paul Eccles in the combined 30-39 A Final. Just four riders in each of the 40s groups with Bristol's Brian Hopes beating Exeter's Brian Shell in 40-44 and Duchy's Ian Wherry ahead of Cornwall's Darren Lanyon in 45+.
A well run meeting at this popular venue that has in the past been blighted by local resident's complaints about the noise but thankfully not on this occasion. The next round of the Series takes riders to Blackwater raceway, home of Cornwall BMX Club on July 25 where Ginsters of Cornwall are supporting the event.
