Qualifying as a Level 2 Club Coach in 2001 I am a Level 3 Track Coach, and also qualified as a Level 2 Coach for MTB, Cyclo-Cross and Road and Time Trial. I hold a Diploma from Newcastle College in Sport Psychology and I am a member of the British Cycling Coach Tutor team, training candidate coaches to their Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications. Based in Brighton, Sussex nearby Preston Park Velodrome, I was part of a small group of enthusiasts who kick started youth cycling at Preston Park in the late 1990s. Since then I have been at the vanguard of British Cycling programmes in coaching and in youth cycling.
Successes, relevant to my coaching work, include our youth cycling club being voted Brighton and Hove 'Club of the Year,' British Cycling 'Club of the Year,' and myself becoming Sussex 'Sport Coach of the Year.' In 2012 I led a youth team of Young Games Makers track centre at the Olympic Velodrome. In 2013 I became the Veteran Brompton World Champion which I repeated in 2014. More recently I think I have retired from competitive cycling though a very successful full knee replacement in 2021 sees me becoming a more active cyclist again.
I am highly interested in community cycle sport and, enjoy supporting the breakdown of personal barriers to success, this includes working with riders from complete novice through to longstanding dyed in the wool cyclists. I believe that all people can benefit from coaching advice and, that most riders have riding skills less well developed than they think, often due to lack of consideration of cycling technique and lack of practice.
I enjoy working with groups, clubs and individuals on skill and training development and do so with a personable, analytical and supportive coaching style. I am accredited to coach at Calshot, Lee Valley, Manchester and Newport indoor velodromes but, due to having a day job as a teacher in an Outstanding Sixth Form College, I have only a limited offer of personal training plans these being adopted where there is a particular interest or connection with the rider’s goals. I try to keep hidden the fact that I am a qualified Track Commissaire as I only use that qualification in emergencies at our local track.
With a passion for track racing my competition interests have included road, cross and mtb; I can even ride a unicycle and if you put me on any type of bike I will be having fun. To stay busy I also run a small wheel building company, called True Wheels, specialising in high quality and good value hand built wheels for track, road, off-road and touring cyclists and we also specialise in e-bike conversions for customer's bikes.
