Premier League: Sheffield 100 - Norwich 79

Event: 21st June 2009, Sheffield

Report: Shaun Hudson

With both sides missing a number of key riders, today was the chance for the youngsters to step up to the challenge of Premier League racing and they did so admirably. Sheffield brought in Leon Wild for his first senior match along with Simon Gamble. New signing Piotr Jamroscyzk made his home debut and scored a brilliant 19 points.

Sheffield made a good start to the meeting that saw Andy Angell and Ryan Hoyland take a 7-3 after a great final  bend from Angell which not only saw him take the lead but get his partner through into second. With another 7-3 in the next race, Sheffield were in the driving seat and steadily built on their lead. New-boy Leon Wild started off with a heat win and when Angell and Hoyland repeated their first outing 7-3, the writing was on the wall for Norwich.

The Norfolk side had not come all the way to Sheffield to make up the numbers and after the interval they rallied and with 3 heat advantages in a row they pulled themselves back into the match. Unfortunately for them with Nick Myhill, Phil Howells and Jazz Abbott all missing today, it was just too much ground to make up and Sheffield rounded off proceedings with another 7-3 courtesy of Angell and Jamroscyzk, but for a tapes exclusion Angell could well have topped the scoring today.

Good racing from both teams was well-handled by referee Pete Dalley and the scoreline doesn't reflect the effort and team spirit showed by the Norwich riders.

In the combination match, Norwich proved way too strong for the Sheffield youngsters and ran out easy winners with the match finishing at Sheffield 45 - Norwich 82

Premier League: Leicester 83 - Birmingham 93

Event: 21st June 2009, Leicester Cycle Speedway Club

Report: Tim Jarvis

The match was nip and tuck for the first half of the encounter, Birmingham going into the interval just three points up. Although tape exclusions for Whitehead and Stephenson certainly helped the visitors in the second half, it was a nasty crash in heat fifteen which probably ruined any chances the home team had of pulling off a win.

Lewis Bates and the chasing Daniel Pike ended up in an almighty heap, unfortunately Pike caught his hand in Bates's rear wheel and suffered a hand injury which ruled him out of the rest of the meeting.

Marcus Wadhams was the visitors trump card scoring freely from reserve whist Nowacki and Marchant did their best to keep the Monarchs in the match.

Debbie Mittell Charity Shield

Event: 20th June 2009, Somersham, Ipswich

Report & Images: Brian Barnett

Somershaw Cycle Speedway hosted the Debbie Mittell Charity Shield, raising funds for Ipswich's St Elizabeth Hospice. The event consisted of two matches, the Fun Pairs and the more serious business of the Charity Shield.

Fun Pairs

The Fun Pairs did exactly what it said on the tin, with a former Speedway Rider making a guest appearance, scoring 12 points including a race win in heat 12 and crossing the finishing line to the biggest cheer of the afternoon.

The weather changed with every race; with everything from light rain to sunshine to showers. This however didn't dampen the excitement of the large crowd, who were entertained with some superb racing, and some good old fashioned horseing around from the riders.

Charity Shield

The meeting moved on to the more serious match, the Charity Shield, which saw some fast and exciting racing. The result was tight, with just one point separating winners Daniel Pike and Leon Yelland from second placed Adam Peck and Lewis Osborne.  There was a tie for third place so a run off between one rider from each pairing decided the winner, with David Adams taking the win from Andy Turnbull.

In all, a truly entertaining afternoon of racing with the added bonus of raising money for an extremely worthy cause, the Ipswich St Elizabeth Hospice being the real winners. Deborah Mittell would have been proud,
