Edinburgh Cycle Speedway News
Latest news from Edinburgh Cycle Speedway Club's Tommy Lee
It has all been quiet again on the Cycle Speedway front as holidays kick in and preparations are made for the visit of Bury on 19th July. At the time of writing Bury are lying in joint 4th place with Edinburgh in the Northern League albeit ahead on points difference. With both teams at full strength there is not much between them so the fixture could prove a close one to call.
This will be the Falcons' first home fixture since the Home International back in June and what a fixture it was. The feedback the club has had about the whole day has been great and just proves what can be achieved when we work together.
We also had great support from our Sponsors and a special mention should be given to Scottish Cycling in a time when our governing bodies don't get great recognition they pulled through to help out with the temporary fencing.
Since the Home International we have had two away league fixtures, Stoke and Stockport which unfortunately resulted in no league points traveling back north. Let's hope for two points on the 19th July. Tapes up at 2pm.
In other news - the Glasgow Cycle Speedway History Society are having an evening get together on Mon 17th August at Sloans Bar, Argyle Arcade, Glasgow. 17th August being significant in that this will be the 40th anniversary of Scotland's first ever victory over England at Cycle Speedway. A few Scottish "caps" will be around to reminisce, and everyone is welcome.
British Team Championship Quarter Final - Gt Blakenham v Horspath
5th July 2009
Report: Geoff Gamage
This was a tense affair, not short of incident, with four of the opening five races drawn. The drama started in heat 3 when James Studd came down in a battle for third with Mark Carmichael, the former ending up with a suspected broken thumb.
Heat 6 saw Horspath get a 7-3 from Morgans and Dave Carmichael, The home side hit back in the 8th heat, taking advantage of a Boaler exclusion for a 6-3. Heat 9 was full of incident with first Jason Ashford excluded for excessive force , then Rob Hunt followed by Dan Osborne for separate gate exclusions, leaving Morgans to complete a lap for an unusual 4-0 and a six point interval lead.
The second half started like the first with two drawn heats - Horspath extending their lead in the 12th from a Morgans / Dave Carmichael 6-4 over the previously unbeaten Lewis Osborne. In the next heat a good ride from Leon Mower saw a 7-3 with Jason Ashford, reducing the deficit by half. Both teams exchanged 6-4s for the next two heats - Horspath's win coming from Harris / Hutt, with Blakenham's courtesy of Mower / Peck. Heat 16 saw a fine win from Dave Carmichael with Daniel Harper third, giving Horspath another 6-4 and stretching the visitor's lead to 6 points overall.
Lewis and Chris Osborne replied in kind in the penultimate heat but Horspath sealed the match with a last heat 7-3 from Harris / Boaler, clinching a semi-final berth and keep their dream of regaining the title alive.

British Team Championships Quarter Final - Norwich v Wednesfield
5th July 2009, Eaton Park
Report: Lee Grange
On a wonderful Sunday afternoon at Eaton Park, and with the weather bring so kind, The Money Centre / Norwich ‘Stars' took on old foes Wednesfield ‘Aces' at Eaton Park in the Quarter-finals of the British Senior Team Championship for the right to see who will go through to the Semi-final stage of the Competition which is to be held at East Newport in September writes Glenn Grange.
On a track that had seen well over two hundred heats of Cycle Speedway the previous day due to the British Youth & Junior League National Round 1, the Eaton Park track looked in remarkably good condition as both sides lined up for Heat 1. The match started with a shared scoring heat, with Nowich making the early breakthrough in Heat
2 when Richard Williamson and Lee Grange scored a 6 - 4 heat win (11 - 9). Straight away Wednesfield replied the best way possible from Scott Doherty and Lee Aris with a 7 - 3 heat win to go into the lead (14 - 16). The home side then scored a 6 - 3 heat win when The Aces Captain Chris Jewkes was excluded for ‘Moving at the Tapes', and then in the very next heat, Norwich's Leigh Cossey lowered Wednesfield's Terry Norman's colours with a victory that saw Leigh win ina time of 42.6 seconds.
Norwich's 6 - 4 heat win in Heat 5 saw The Stars re-take the lead by 26 - 23, but they could not build on that slender lead in Heat 7 when yet again Scott Doherty and Lee Aris came to Wednesfield's rescue with a fine 7 - 3 heat win (34 - 35). Mark Griffiths came in for Roger Cox for Wednesfield in Heat 8 for a shared scoring heat (39 - 40), and then the former British Senior finalist partnered Sam Smith to a 6 - 4 heat win in Heat 9 as Wednesfield went into the interval leading 43 - 46.
The second half started just like the first with a shared scoring heat, and then in Heat 11, Scott Doherty was excluded by Referee Mark Winwood for yet another tapes offence. Lee Aris showed his true determination as he had to make his way through the traffic, defeating back-to-form Richard Williamson and Lee Grange to take the chequered flag in what was to be the fastest race winning time of the match 42 1 seconds and a 4 - 5 heat score (53 - 55).
Wednesfield's Terry Norman took his first race win of the afternoon in the very next heat for a shared scoring heat ( 58 - 60), and the shrewd Wednesfield management team of Mick Aris and Roger Ellis brought in Mark Griffiths for an extra ride in Heat 13 (63 - 65). Lee Grange and Veteran Chris Cullum brought Norwich level in Heat 14 with a 6 - 4 heat win (69 - 69), but the ever reliable pairing of Lee Aris and Mark Griffiths gave The Aces a four point lead with the first 7 - 3 heat win of the second half (72 - 76).
With just three heats to go, and the match building up to a crescendo, Norwich had to come out firing on all cylinders if they wanted to progress in this year's competition. Ian Grange won Heat 16 for a shared scoring heat, Lee Aris went on to win Heat 17 by a mile for another shared scoring heat, and Richard Williamson of Norwich went on to win Heat 18, but in Heat 18 his partner Leigh Cossey could not find a way past Chris Jewkes for that vital second place that would have given Norwich the draw.
As it happened, Leigh made an attempt to pass Jewkes, but as he made the move he clipped the Wednesfield rider's back wheel on the final lap and fell, giving Wednesfield a shared scoring heat and the hard earned win. This was a superb Cycle Speedway match overall that neither side deserved to lose. Wednesfield came, saw and conquered, but the never-say-die attitude from Norwich made it the match it was.
This match was well Refereed by Mark Winwood of Birmingham, and all from Norwich wish Wednesfield well as they try to go on and retain this Championship they won last year.

East London 75 v Kesgrave 83.
5th July 2009
Report and Images: Brian Barnett
Some thrilling action images from Cycle Speedway Photographer Brian Barnett, who was at a dusty East London track for a close encounter between East London and Kesgrave.
At the half time interval it could have gone either way, with the scores at East London 39 Kesgrave 40. However, from heat nine onwards, Kesgrave piled on the pressure and with a second half chock full of drama and crashes Kesgrave slowly pulled away, with the final score at East London 75 Kesgrave 83.
Here's a great sequence of shots from one of the many crashes that punctuated the second half.
... And here's another great crash sequence, as more riders eat East London dust!
