Northern League - Bury v Astley & Tyldesley
2nd August 2009, Bury
Report: Mike Hack
Astley & Tyldesley were bolstered by the inclusion of Remi Burchardt and Dariusz Pilas for the trip to Bury for Sunday's Northern League match. The two Poles made their first appearance in A & T colours for three months and both raced to impressive 20 points maximum scores. After a very tight first half, Bury held a one point interval lead. The home side took two 7-3 heat wins in the second half and with most of the other races shared, this proved decisive, as they ran out 93-86 winners. Ben Dickenson won his last race to finish on 14 points, but the absence of one more high scoring rider proved costly for A & T. Bury had six solid scoring riders and made full use of John Whiting at reserve, with the 61 year old dropping his only point to Dickenson in his last race.
Northern League match result
Bury 93 Astley & Tyldesley 86
Bury: John Whiting 17 (2), Neil Howarth 17, Chris Parish 16 (1), Tom Doyle 16, Joe Allen 11 (4), Jon-Luc Miladinovic 11 (3), Marc Nealon 5.
A & T: Remi Burchardt 20, Dariusz Pilas 20, Ben Dickenson 14, Roy Heslop 9 (1), Joel Partington 8 (1), Luke Jamson 8, Laura Watson 6, Adam Watson 1.
Referee - Gary Nuttall.
The Combination match earlier in the season at Gin Pit finished in a draw and this one proved to be almost as close. A & T held a 1 point lead after six heats, but Bury hit back with two 6-4s to take a 3 points lead after heat 9. A & T put in their two tactical reserves, Ben Dickenson and Luke Jamson, to take a 7-3 win over Michael Kennedy and Adam South, to regain the lead after heat 10. Dickenson pulled off a great pass on Jon-Luc Miladinovic on the last lap to share the points in heat 11. Joe Allen passed Jamson in heat 12, but with Joel Partington comfortably in third place, the points were again shared and A & T held on for a 60-59 win. For A & T, Dickenson raced unbeaten, with Jamson losing once. For Bury, Allen lost only to Dickenson, with Miladinovic beaten only by Dickenson and Jamson.

Midland League - Leicester v Sandwell
Report: Tim Jarvis
A depleted Leicester team did very well to stop the visitors passing the three figure mark. Nowacki notched a maximum but his only real support came from Marchant and Mark Whitehead although Matt Hartshorn rode hard for little reward.
Sandwell on the other hand didn't have a weak link and were always in control of the match, opening up a twelve point lead after Scott Millward was the only finisher in an eventful heat seven and never looking back from that point.
Leicester 75 (L Nowacki 20, C Marchant 15+1)
Sandwell 97 (L Smith 16+2, R Hoyland 14+1, J Brown 14+1)

Midland League - Birmingham v Wednesfield
Report: John Heard
Birmingham maintained their position at the top of the Midland League with this comprehensive win over their local rivals. Both sides were missing key riders - Birmingham missing Dominic Rychardski, Carl Winwood and Andy James, while Wednesfield missed Mike Morgans, Scott Docherty and the Haddocks.
Birmingham however showed their strength in depth and won 9 of the 18 races with 7-3 victories - Wednesfield providing only 4 of the 18 race winners.
Heat 1 was a drawn heat with Paul Heard grabbing the first of his 5 race wins ahead of Chris Jewkes and reserve Roger Cox, but Birmingham edged ahead in the next heat when Paul Timms beat Sam Smith with Marcus Wadhams getting 3rd place for a 6-4. Mark Winwood won heat 3 with Chris Timms right behind him, and Paul Heard and Bob Prince repeated the feat in heat 4. Chris Jewkes gained the first Wednesfield race win in heat 5 but with Wayne Aris trailing in last the heat was drawn. Heat 6 was Mark Winwood's 2nd race win and Birmingham's 3rd 7-3. The next race was even worse for Wednesfield as first John Russell and then Dayle Peace were excluded by referee Al Bentley for moving at the tapes gifting Birmingham a 7-0 race win. At the half time stage the score as 56-30.
The 2nd half of the match started no better for Wednesfield as Birmingham gained 3 7-3's in the first 4 races including two more race wins for Mark Winwood. Dayle Peace became the 2nd Wednesfield race winner heading home Paul Timms and Bob Prince in heat 14 but two 6-4's and another 7-3 in heat 17 saw Birmingham past the 100 point mark. Heat 18 did see Wednesfield gain some consolation with a 7-3 from Chris Jewkes & Dayle Peace beating Nathan Groves and the previously unbeaten Mark Winwood but by that time the Birmingham pits were already celebrating.
A thoroughly entertaining match ridden in good spirits and very well refereed by Al Bentley - well done to all concerned.
Result
Birmingham 110 : Paul Heard 20, Mark Winwood 18, Chris Timms 16+4, Bob Prince 12+3, Nathan Groves 12+2, Marcus Wadhams 12+1, Paul Timms 12, Tom Sensicall 8+2
Wednesfield 66 : Chris Jewkes 15+1, Dayle Peace 12+1, Sam Smith 12, Roger Cox 10, Charley Ellitts & Reanna Brindley 6, Wayne Aris 3, John Russell 2.
Combination
Exactly what combination speedway should be with a mix of youth and experience and everyone seeming to have a good time. Birmingham provided 12 of the 13 race winners thanks to Phil Widdas, Adam Lamb and Mark Fletcher, but Wednesfield only lost out in two of the 13 races thanks to their strength in depth with some great riding from John Russell, Ryan Harpin and James Harriman in particular.
Birmingham would once again like to thank Wednesfield for sportingly allowing young Ryan Winwood his points despite being lapped and must also congratulate young Reece Winwood for staying on the pace in each of his races to avoid being lapped - well done Reece.
Result
Birmingham 66: Phil Widdas 20, Adam Lamb 16, Mark Fletcher 15+1, Jordan Russell 6, Reece Winwood 5, Ryan Winwood 4
Wednesfield 64: Ryan Harpin 15+1, John Russell 14+1, James Harriman 10+1, James Gallea 9+4, Alex Aris 8+2, Sharna Cox 5+2, Reanna Brindley 3.

Northern League - Edinburgh v Hull
2nd August 2009, Redbraes
Report: Tommy Lee
The Edinburgh Falcons suffered a home Northern League defeat at the hands of Hull today (2nd Aug 2009) losing by 91 points to 80.
At the start of the day the prospects of a home win were boosted by the arrival of a slightly under strength Hull side who were still able to track England International Andy Angell at number one with Ireland International Adam Stephenson in support.
However, after an eventful heat one the meeting was tipped in Hull's favour after Referee Chic Mackie handed out an exclusion to the Falcons number one Craig Newsome after a coming together with Hull's Ben Swanborough on the third bend after Falcons Tommy Lee had pushed around the outside into 2nd behind Andy Angell.
Newsome took exception the Referee's decision and a not unexpected match ban was to follow. The Falcons were now missing their number one and up against it.
The visitors pulled out a lead of nine points going into the half time break and things looked bleak indeed for the home side who were feeling aggrieved at some of the Refereeing decisions going against them. The 2nd half started brightly for the home side with a one two from Slight and Hewitson in heat 10 but although the Falcons managed to pin Hull back to just a six point lead by the end of heat 16 the lack of strength in depth was to prove their downfall.
It could be argued that the after effects of the indiscipline in heat one put the result beyond but the match itself contained some fine racing and some great individual performances. For Hull, Angell and Stephenson raced unbeaten by an opponent and for the home side Slight dropped only one point to Stephenson in heat 12 and newly crowned British over 60's champion Jonny Murphy scored 13 points which included one win from his four rides.
Edinburgh 80: C Newsome 0, T Lee7+1, A McDougall, 9, N McPherson 7+1, G Kennedy 11+3, M Hewitson 14+1, J Murphy 13, J Slight 19
Hull 91: A Angell 19+1, A Stephenson 20, J Hunt, 6, S Plows 15, I Swanborough 7+1, B Swanborough 9, L Alymer 15+1
Referee: C Mackie, Glasgow
The next official home match for the Falcons is against Heckmondwike on 27th Sep although it is hoped to rearrange the home match against Bury sometime before then on a date yet to be agreed.
The Falcons are also in action away from home on 16th Aug visiting Astley & Tyldesley and Bury in a double header of League fixtures.
... And here's Andy Schofield's account of the event:
EDINBURGH 80 HULL 91 NORTHERN LEAGUE 2ND AUGUST 2009
Hull made the long trip to Edinburgh for a Northern League fixture minus several first team regulars. The home side were also suffering from the long term absence of Alan Smith and Lee Lawrence through injury and a close match looked guaranteed.
There was high drama from the start as Edinburgh's Craig Newsome was excluded for persistent slow riding and then received a match ban from referee Chic Mackie for abusive language. The large crowd were enjoying the spectacle as heat 2 saw the home sides Neil McPherson excluded for causing James Hunt to fall heavily and the visitors had quickly opened up a six point lead. Hull soon found this wasn't to be an easy win as Edinburgh replied with heat wins to Mikey Hewittson / Gavin Kennedy and Jake Sleight / Tommy Lee.
Hull's Adam Stephenson and Andy Angell looked at home on the large Redbraes track which was cutting up but still providing some good racing, while the home sides Jake Sleight was proving a real handful with his bursts of speed on the outside line. Hull opened up a 9 point interval lead thanks to a maximum heat win from Andy Angell and Lewis Aylmer although Edinburgh's management looked perplexed as the race had initially been brought back on the opening lap with the positions reversed.
Alan Smth entertained the crowd during the interval with his commentary and Edinburgh narrowed their deficit to 4 points thanks to a Mikey Hewittson / Jake Sleight 7-2 after a number of attempts to start the race. Adam Stephenson / James Hunt extended this by 3 points but heat 14 was to be crucial. John Murphy and team mate Neil McPherson led the way into the final bend as Simon Plows made a pass on the inside line with Neil appearing to turn into him and fall on the starting gate. The referee ruled that this was a foul and Hull had salvaged a heat win from a difficult position.
Ben Swanborough took a second place behind Jake Sleight in heat 15 after hard work from dad Ian and finally Hull could begin to relax. Adam Stephenson / Ian Swanborough and Lewis Aylmer / Simon Plows rounding things off with heat wins in the final two races.
Hull will be pleased with a disciplined performance capped by unbeaten displays from Andy Angell and Adam Stephenson and battling performances from all the side including Lewis Aylmer's best this season. Edinburgh will feel that they could have taken the points but will take some consolation from Jake Sleight's performance. John Murphy was introduced to the crowd as the new British over 60's champion and responded with a vintage display. Away from the cut and thrust of racing the Edinburgh welcome was as warm as ever.
Edinburgh 80: Craig Newsome 0, Tommy Lee 7+1, Andy McDougal 9, Neil McPherson 7+1, Gavin Kennedy 12+2, Mikey Hewittson 13+2, John Murphy 13, Jake Sleight 19.
Hull 91: Andy Angell 19+1, Adam Stephenson 20, James Hunt 6, Simon Plows 15, Ian Swanborough 7+1, Ben Swanborough 9, Lewis Aylmer 15+1.
