Heckmondwike v Hull

Northern League match - 16 August
Report: Andy Schofield

Hull made the short trip down the M62 to Heckmondwike for a Northern League fixture on a warm sunny day. The Firth Park track was well prepared but became dusty as the meeting progressed. The Saints fielded their strongest pairing of James Carter and Dave Murphy in the opening race and they followed home Andy Angell for a drawn heat and relegated a Hull rider to last place for the only time during the match.

The visitors quickly got into their stride and found the main opposition from this opening pair and from Darren Kent. The home sides Dave Murphy won heat 4 and also took heat 8, but unfortunately team mate James Carter took a fall in this race and took no further part in the racing.

Hull led by 15 points at the Interval and were able to give the non programmed reserves some extra rides in the second half. Darren Kent won heat 10 and took a couple of good second places as did Dave Murphy. But Hull were able to win 6 of the second half races and comfortably take home the two league points. Matt Beharrell was unbeaten from four starts for Hull with Andy Angell and Adam Stephenson only dropping one point apiece. The rest of the side provided good support with reserve Andy Moody only beaten once in three rides, while Andy Morris made his debut for the West Riding side and suffered a heavy fall in his final race.

Heckmondwike 57: Dave Murphy 16+1, Darren Kent 16, Richard Westcott 7, Chris Bingham 7, James Carter 6, Andy Morris 5.

Hull 90: Matt Beharrell 16, Andy Angell 15, Adam Stephenson 15, Corey Graham 10+2, Andy Norrie 10+1, Andy Moody 9+2, Lewis Aylmer 9+1, James Hunt 6+1.

Edinburgh Cycle Speedway

Report: Tommy Lee

Last Weekend (16th Aug) Edinburgh made the well travelled trip down the motorway to Greater Manchester for a double header of away Northern League fixtures. First up was Bury at noon where the recently under strength home side managed to rustle up a few old stagers for the visit of their friends from the North.

An under strength Falcons side minus No1 Craig Newsome (suspended), and heat leaders Lee Lawrence and Alan Smith (both injured) had their fair share of old stagers to match Bury making it a fairly even strength line up. It was the home side though who started better with three 7-3s in the first three races which effectively left the Falcons with too much to do eventually losing out by 96 points to 82.

Best for the Falcons was young Jake Slight who scored a great 19 points from 5 races and is improving with each race.

Bury 96:  Paul Dyson 18, Chris Parish 18, Ben Scranage 18, Chris Dyson 13, John Whiting 12, Jon-Luc Milodinavic 10, Michael Kennedy 7

Edinburgh 82:
Jake Slight 19, John Murphy 14, Neil McPherson 12, Mikey Hewitson 10, Tommy Lee 9, Gavin Kennedy 9, Chic Mackie 5, Ian McKinlay 4

Referee: Gary Hollingsworth

A quick trip up the motorway and a 3pm start at Astley & Tyldesley where the home side had their usual mix of youngsters and International stars from Poland.

The home side led by six points after heat three, but Edinburgh were level two heats later after Johnny Murphy came out for two successive rides. Astley & Tyldesley regained the lead, were eight points ahead at the break and controlled the scoring to the end. The Falcons losing out this time by 99 points to 81 which was in part due to the excesses of the two matches.

Jake Slight again scored an impressive17 points but it could be argued was outshone in the entertainment stakes by Mikey Hewitson who although scored a point less managed a neat overtake up the inside of Remi Burchardt in heat 4 to deny the Pole any chance of a maximum performance.

Astley & Tyldesley 99: Piotr Jamroszczyk 20, Dariusz Pilas 19, Remi Burchardt 19, Ben Dickenson 15, Luke Jamson 12, Andy Knowles 6, Will Evans 5, Matthew J. Turnbull 3.

Edinburgh 81: Jake Slight 17, Mike Hewitson 16, Gavin Kennedy 12, John Murphy 11, Neil McPherson 11, Tommy Lee 6, Chic Mackie 5, Ian McKinlay 3.

Referee - Gary Nuttall.

East Park Wolves v Sandwell Lions

Report: Lee Aris

The match got underway with the worst possible start for the home team after East Park heat leader Mat Turley managed to hold off Sandwell's Ryan Hoyland for three and a quarter laps only to crash out after a last bend challenge from Ryan. Matt was unable to finish giving the visitors an early 5 point lead and worst still Matt pulled out after his next ride due to injury.

Lee Aris took the first of his four heat victories in heat 2 - his only lass was to Lee Smith in heat 14. Heat 3 was shared as ,this time, East Park duo Liam Johnson and Stu Bentley slotting in between Sandwell's Lee Smith and Scott Millward. However, the tide turned completely Sandwell's way in heat 4, the first of six 7-3 heat wins to the Lions. Sandwell's strength and depth proved too much for an East Park Wolves side that only managed two heat wins of their own.

It was not all doom and gloom for the East Park Wolves as their Under-13 star Liam Johnson-Rich was second top scorer with a very respectable 13+1 and a debut score of 9pts for Luke Draisey was also impressive. Credit must go to the Wednesfield Aces Club taking the bold step of creating East Park Wolves, not only weakening their own prestige status in the Midland League but creating a new club and benefiting Cycle Speedway as a whole.

East Park Wolves 75: Matt Turley 1, Jordan Rich 8, Armand Bentley 6, Lee Aris 19, Liam Johnson-Rich 13+1, Stu Bentley 8+2, Luke Draisey 9, Mick Aris 10+1

Sandwell Lions 101: Russ Evans 14+2, Ryan Hoyland 17+2, Jamie Brown 18, Matt Smith 4+1, Lee Smith 17+2, Scott Millward 9+2, Phill Hemming 6+1, Jim Palmer 16+1

The Combination Match saw another heavy defeat for the East Park Wolves side with Sandwell clocking up a heat win in every heat with an impressive nine 7-3's and four 6-4's. East Park will build on the positives with 3 new riders making their debut and knowing that there is another cycle speedway club in the making.

East Park Wolves 43: Jordan Rich 7, Tara Warren 4, Luke Draisey 12, Rick Reeves 2, Liam Johnson-Rich 10, Jamie Burke 6, Armand Bentley 2

Sandwell Lions 87: Matt Smith 17+3, Ricki Johnson 14, Scott Millward 19+1, Phill Hemming 11+3, Jim Palmer 15+1, Tony Bowen 11+1

Astley & Tyldesley v Edinburgh

Northern League
Report: Mike Hack

Astley & Tyldesley recorded their second league win of the season with a convincing 99-81 win over Edinburgh, in Sunday's Northern League match at Gin Pit.

A & T led by 6 points after heat 3, but Edinburgh were level two heats later after British Super Veteran Champion John Murphy came out for two successive rides. A & T promptly regained the lead and were 8 points ahead at the break. A controlled second half performance saw A & T continue to pull away, to avenge their defeat at Redbraes in April.

Piotr Jamroszczyk was the star of the show for A & T, winning all his five races on his first appearance at Gin Pit. He combined wins from four fast gates from outside grids, with a fine pass on Mike Hewitson to complete his maximum in heat 16. Dariusz Pilas also raced unbeaten, with Remi Burchardt losing just once, when passed by Hewitson in heat 4. Local youngsters Ben Dickenson and Luke Jamson were in good form, providing strong support to the top trio. For Edinburgh, Jake Slight impressed at reserve, winning three races, with Hewitson riding consistently well with a win and four seconds. The match was ridden in a very sporting atmosphere, with no exclusions made.

Northern League match result

Astley & Tyldesley 99: Piotr Jamroszczyk 20, Dariusz Pilas 19 (1), Remi Burchardt 19, Ben Dickenson 15 (2), Luke Jamson 12 (1), Andy Knowles 6 (1), Will Evans 5, Matthew J. Turnbull 3.

Edinburgh 81: Jake Slight 17 (1), Mike Hewitson 16, Gavin Kennedy 12, John Murphy 11 (3), Neil McPherson 11, Tommy Lee 6 (2), Chic Mackie 5, Ian McKinlay 3.
Referee - Gary Nuttall.

Newcomer Regan Bond won the 5th Round of the North West Go-Race Grand Prix series, beating Max Evans in a run-off, after both lads had finished with 16 points. Another newcomer, Kian Crane, scored 12 to finish in 3rd place. The handicapping system proved too much for Ben Dickenson and Luke Jamson to overcome. This result places Max Evans in the lead on 55 points, 2 ahead of Adam Watson, with one round remaining.

North West Go-Race Grand Prix Round 5: Regan Bond 16, Max Evans 16, Kian Crane 12, Connor Blakeley 10, Ben Dickenson 8, Tyler Koch 8, Luke Jamson 6.

Birmingham v Leicester

Midland League
Report: Tim Jarvis

Birmingham sealed the Midland League title with a hard fought, but very sporting, victory at Leicester.

The lead changed hands several times before the interval, however, in heat six just when Leicester seemed to be able to pull a gap on their rivals a rare tapes exclusion for Nowacki handed the advantage back to the visitors, only for Heard and Groves to get in each others way in the very next race to hand the lead back to the hosts.

The home side's slender three point lead was wiped out in heat eleven, the well placed Rob Venson slipping off his pedals and the Heard/Groves pairing making up for their previous mistake to take a maximum. Heat fourteen was the race of the day, Norm Venson coming from the back in vintage style to pass Carl Winwood and Groves but unfortunately not able to maintain his pace to the end, the visitors taking full advantage to re-pass and take a 7-3.

In the end Birmingham had too much strength in depth and fully deserve the league crown.

Leicester 85 (N Whitehead 16, L Nowacki 15+1, K Burns 15, C Marchant 13+4, N Venson 10+1, R Venson 10, M Hartshorn 3, S Hartshorn 3)

Birmingham 94 (C Timms 19, M Wadhams 17, P Heard 14+1, N Groves 11+3, P Timms 9+2, M Winwood 9, C Winwood 8+2, T Sensicall 6)
