South and South West League

Report: Graham Sutton

Another competitive day of league racing in the South West saw four closely fought matches with the tightest scoreline at the Oasis where East Newport picked up their first away win of the season. The Wiltshire club had the lion's share of race winners but the Welsh outfit had a better balanced side and held a vital five point lead with one heat remaining which was just as well for them as they conceded a 7-3 in heat 18. League leaders Poole selected their most experienced line-up for the visit of second placed Newport but made hard work of the victory which was not assured until the final heat when Chris Roberts teamed up with Arron Morgan for a vital 7-3. Veteran Rob Haywood put together his best score of the season with a 22 point haul for Southampton at Hellingly but this could not prevent the Eastbourne club from completing the double in the South Coast derby. Mark Reed proved a more than adequate replacement for son Thomas as he inspired Exeter to an away victory at Horspath for whom Steve Harris was again in unbeatable form.

Heatersett v Norwich - 16th June 2010

Report: Glenn Grange

It was local derby time for the third time this season when Hethersett and Norwich met in the Eastern League Division One last Wednesday at the Memorial Playing Field writes Glenn Grange.

Norwich had won to two previous league meetings, and with some fine riding made it three victories in 2010 over the Hawks. The first four heats were drawn before the vastly improved Josh Colby and Lee Grange scored a maximum 7-3 in heat 5 which gave Norwich a lead they would never relinquish. With big hitters Lee Grange, Leigh Cossey and Ian Grange in their line up the visitors were always able to dominate races. Hethersett were too reliant on both Dan Chambers and Ben Collins to score race wins and did lose points due to negative race tactics.

The final score was 86-93 in favour of Norwich. Top scorer for Hethersett was Dan Chambers with 17+1 points, whilst for Norwich once again Lee Grange top scored dropping just one point and scoring 18+1.

Norwich v Great Blakenham - 20th June 2010

Report: Glenn Grange

On Sunday 20th June Norwich entertained current Eastern League Division One league leaders Great Blakenham at Eaton Park. With star riders Leigh Cossey and Ian Grange both unavailable team manager Gary Colby brought in youngsters James Wakefield and Kieran Parr, giving the home team a youthful looking line up. However the shoes were too big to fill for the Norwich young guns and they went down 83 - 96. Lee Grange again was the pick of the Norwich riders scoring 18 points, and was also backed up by Scotland International Josh Colby who put in another good performance.

Fixtures for this coming week are the Norfolk Under 16 Championships at Harford Park, Norwich, on Wednesday 23rd June. On Saturday 26th June riders from Norfolk will compete in the last regional round of the British Junior League at Ipswich. Finally on Sunday 27th June Norwich travel to Birmingham in the British Premier League in the search for their first victory of the season.

BTC Veterans Final - sponsored by GG Express Couriers

Horspath became the first winners of the new perpetual trophy donated by Dash Trophies for the Vets team. Poole led by one point after the first set of races however with Hammers using World Veteran Champion Steve Harris as a tactical reserve, he raced four of Horspath's grids 3 & 4 heats they soon eased into a comfortable lead by the half way stage. A strong quintet that registered one third place or better throughout. Poole took the silver with some solid scoring, Wednesfield grabbed the bronze, Mark Griffiths scoring a great win over Harris to boot, whilst East London were hampered by Steve Woodruff's injury from the semi.

Astley & Tyldesley v Edinburgh - Junior Challenge Match - 20th June 2010

Report: Mike Hack

Astley & Tyldesley entertained Edinburgh in a junior challenge match at Gin Pit on Sunday. A really good match took place, as Edinburgh took the lead three times before A & T again drew level after heat 9. The home side took the lead for the first time after heat 1, with two successive 7-3 heat wins, after hard riding by first Luke Jamson and then Adam Phillips saw them bring their partners through. A & T sealed the match with a 6-4 in heat 13 and a 7-3 in heat 14. Credit to both teams who each fielded eight junior riders, who gave it their all in a very hard fought, sporting, competitive match.

Adam Phillips raced unbeaten for A & T, whilst Luke Jamson dropped his only point in the last race to Michael Lee. First year riders Bethan Braithwaite and Reece Pollitt continue to improve, whilst Stefan Whitelegg battled on after a fall on the back straight. The three Lee brothers all impressed for Edinburgh, along with Paul Kelly, all of whom won races. Douglas Morgan recovered well after taking a heavy fall third time out.

East Newport v Swindon - 20th June 2010

Report: Gilbert Davis

East Newport Cycle Speedway team recorded their third Division one victory of the season with an impressive away win at Swindon. Missing two of their top riders, the Club promoted riders from their combination and conference teams to fill the first team vacancies. On the difficult Wiltshire circuit the home team started strongly building up an early five point lead, but the East Enders kept plugging away never allowing the Swindon team to build up a bigger lead.

With the East Newport team having a stronger second half pairings a very close match was inevitable as this proved with East Newport running out victorious 90 - 89. Each rider played their part in a surprising but well deserved victory, no more so than the brilliant young duo of Aaron Hughes, Louis Harvey & the fast starting Dan Bock.

Scores:

Mike Rice 11+3, Ryan Lewis 11.
Dan Bock 13+1, Aaron Hughes 13+1
Matt Davis 9+3, Louis Harvey 14+2
Neil Power 12+1, Rob Absalom 7

East Newport's division 2 combination team scored an impressive 68 - 40 victory at Swindon maintaining their position as league leaders. Youngsters Khalid Mitha and Tudor Coombes were the star riders on the day for the East Enders & were well supported by Cory B Jones & Welsh veteran Ian Sizer.

The East Newport team are next in action against local rivals Newport on Sunday 27th June, racing at Spytty Park Sports Village circuit starting at 2pm.
