Report: Midland League - Wednesfield V Sandwell

A quick trip across the Black Country saw Sandwell take on Wednesfield in the Midland League. With both teams fielding weakened sides it was to prove an interesting match between experience and youth.

A flying start from Matt Smith saw the Sandwell youngster hold off Wednesfield's Mark Griffiths to take the first win of the afternoon.A fine win from Wednesfield's Sam Smith in heat two gave the feisty Wednesfield number three his first win of the day,an excellent pass by Tom Haddock on the last bend of the heat saw Sandwell's Tom Haddock take second spot in front of brother Matt and Wednesfield's Tony Deleon.

Top scorer of the day, Lee Smith, took his first win of the match in heat three holding off Wednesfield's Roger Cox and Mick Aris. The third drawn heat of the match in heat four saw Wednesfield's Mark Griffiths take the four points from Sandwell's David Ball,a strong ride from Wednesfield youngster Mikey Bassi kept Matt Smith on his toes for his third place. Sandwell duo Ricky Johnson and Jamie Ball proved too strong for Wednesfield's new boys Jordan Holdcroft and Harry Everiss in heat five giving the Sandwell team their first 7-3 of the meeting.

Great team riding by Sam Smith in heat eight allowed Tony De Leon to take second place and three points behind Matt Smith's first spot, the Sandwell rider again showing his strength on the shale. An ever improving Tom Haddock took a strong win in heat nine holding off Wednesfield's Roger Cox and giving the visitors a 6-4 heat win and an eight point lead going into the interval 49-41.

Two back to back wins for Sandwell in heats ten and eleven saw the visitors start to pull out a useful lead but with Mark Griffiths holding his own in heat twelve over Tom Haddock and Roger Cox keeping Matt Smith at bay in heat thirteen the hosts managed to keep the score back to ten points difference 70-60.

Heat fourteen saw Jamie Ball take his second heat win of the match holding off Tony De Leon and with Mikey Bassi rolling over the line in third Wednesfield were still in with a shout for victory but another win in heat fifteen by Lee Smith saw the hosts chance of taking the match slipping away.

Not to be outdone by brother Lee,Matt Smith took an easy win in heat sixteen from Jordon Holdcroft and effectively securing the match for the Sandwell team.Wins from Wednesfield's veterans Mark Griffiths and Mick Aris in the final two heats came a little too late to have any impact on the afternoon and Sandwell ran out winners by six points, 93-87

WEDNESFIELD 87
Mark Griffiths 18, Roger Cox 16+1, Sam Smith 15+2, Tony De Leon 11+1, Mick Aris 11+1, Jordon Holdcroft 8, Mikey Bassi 6+1, Harry Everiss 2

SANDWELL 93
Lee Smith 19, Matt Smith 17, Jamie Ball 14+1, Tom Haddock 14, David Ball 12+2, Ricky Johnson 7, Peter Clark 6, Tom Haddock 4+1

Combination Match
Unfortunately local rivals Sandwell were not able to field one separate rider for the combination fixture and with a late change to the line up by Sandwell management swapping Matt Smith for David Ball meant unbelievably a win was still possible with Sandwell giving away 49pts (not 53pts the case if Matt Smith would of remained in the team).

Wednesfield was able to fill all possible 8 positions with a young combination team who support the junior league and incidentally half the team was female. The Sandwell team went for the challenge recording 12 straight 7 - 3 heat wins and only needed a 6 - 4 heat win in the final heat which they duly took with Jamie Ball riding wide and giving a Wednesfield youngster their only second place in the match. Unfortunately the Wednesfield youngsters took a battering from their rivals and with not many positives for the Wednesfield management to take from the onslaught, they were left bewildered on how this can happen in today's Cycle Speedway.

Wednesfield Aces (40pts + 49pts) 89
Jordan Holdcroft - 9, James Harrimen - 3, Mike Bassi - 9, Charlie Ellitts - 6, Reanna Brindley - 8, Harry Everiss - 3, Courtney Aris - 1, Sharna Cox - 1.

Sandwell Lions
Jamie Ball - 15+4, Ricky Johnson - 20, Tom Haddock - 13+3, Mat Haddock - 15+1, Peter Clarke - 16, David Ball - 12+4.

Report: Midlands League Leicester V Stoke

Whilst this match could possible be described as a BTC semi final warm up, in reality both clubs are likely to field somewhat different teams come September. The early stages saw the home side gradually pull away from the visitors with a series of drawn heats and 6-4 advantages, and they entered the interval nine points to the good.

The same pattern continued after the break until a 7-3 from the returning Hemsley and Kemp in heat 16 followed by another maximum form Marchant and maximum man Nowacki in the next heat. Stoke gained their first heat advantage in heat 17 after Jarvis fell when attempting a pass on Pearce and again in the final heat when the impressive Bates boys were split by Nick Whitehead with reserve Kemp unable to find a way past. An entertaining meeting held in good spirit by both sets of riders.

Leicester 98 (L Nowacki 19+1, C Marchant 17, D Hemsley 15+1, C Jarvis 12, N Whitehead 10, J Kemp 10, M Hartshorn 9+1, A Doughty 6)

Stoke 81 (L Bates 17+1, E Thaw 13+2, L Bates 13, G Pearce 12+1, S Munden 12, A Ellis 8+1, A Purton 4, C Johnson 2)

Combination
Good to see Stoke with a junior team, Leicester put out their most inexperienced side available on the day and it proved to be an interesting match.

Lions 75 (L Hartshorn 15+1, J Whitehead 14+1, C Whitehead 14+1, L Wood 14+1, C Short 13+2, S Sanders 5)

Stoke 53 (A Purton 13, C Johnson 11, W Sweetman 9, R Pope 8+1, E Andersson 6+2, M Hales 6)

Monarchs 84, Stoke 46

Result: Wosskow Brown British Youth & Junior League Round 1 at Astley & Tyldesley

Report - Mike Hack

Astley & Tyldesley hosted the first National Round of the British Youth and Junior League series on Saturday. The event saw a record number of 172 riders competing, with 208 races completed in an event that lasted for more than 10 hours, with the floodlights on for the last hour!

It was a great tribute to the A & T club and the officials imported for the day, that the meeting ran so smoothly and the track held up to provide a great day's racing, despite torrential rain during the early part. The youngsters turned in a terrific display of racing throughout the day, as this competition continues to develop. Poole brought up a squad of 26 riders to win the first national round, with all six teams in strong contention. Congratulations go to all the Grand Prix winners, with Exeter riders taking the first three finals of the day.

Photographs of the meeting will be published later this week on the Astley & Tyldesley website at www.astleycyclespeedway.org.uk

Report: Junior Challenge - Astley & Tyldesley V Stockport

Report - Mike Hack

A & T entertained Stockport in a junior challenge match at Gin Pit on Sunday. A stronger Stockport squad loaned Jake Read to a very inexperienced A & T team, following the non-arrival of Tyler Koch, to make for a more competitive match. A good match took place and although the outcome of a Stockport win was never in doubt, the A & T youngsters gave it their all and gained valuable match experience. Read raced unbeaten, with Reece Pollitt scoring well, whilst Bethan Braithwaite and Alex Green were both race winners. Newcomer Blake Healey impressed for Stockport, with their more experienced riders all scoring well.

Junior Challenge match result
Astley & Tyldesley 67 Stockport 83
A & T: Jake Read 19 (1), Reece Pollitt 13, Bethan Braithwaite 11, Alex Green 10 (1), Max Evans 8 (1), Ross Green 6.

Report: North West Go-Race Grand Prix Round 4

Report - Mike Hack

Round 4 of the North West Go-Race Grand Prix series followed and the handicappings applied made for some good racing and very close finishes. Reece Pollitt won all five races to score a 20 points maximum, with Stockport pair Callum Smith and Jake Read 2nd and 3rd with 19 and 18 points respectively. These three all met in heat 6, which was re-run after Pollitt and Smith locked bikes first time out. Pollitt held off a strong challenge from Smith to win the re-run, with Read making a valiant effort to make up the handicap.
