Report: Midlands League - Leicester V Sheffield

Words: Tim Jarvis | Photos: Magda Nowacki

Leicester simply had too much strength in depth for a plucky Sheffield outfit, although the match was very competitive with some interesting races.

The Monarchs got off to a flyer through a Burns/Jarvis maximum, Hoyland taking heat two from Marchant with Angell passing Venson for good 6-4 for the visitors. Heat six saw Angell inflict the only defeat of the afternoon on Nowacki and the scores were kept close at 33-27.

After the interval the Monarchs eased away with the Stars only able to take one heat advantage, that was after Doughty moved at the tapes in heat ten. The match was rounded off with a fine ride from Marchant who helped his partner Kemp to a heat win over Dickenson.

The above mention Dickenson looked better than his score may suggest, losing out to his oppositions experience on a couple of occasions, Angell, Hoyland and Brown all had race wins and posed plenty of problems.

Nowacki dropped just a single point for Leicester with Marchant and Jarvis, who both featured in some fine team riding, notching paid eighteen each. Hartshorn also had a good match from reserve picking up a couple if wins.

Leicester 100 (L Nowacki 19, C Marchant 16+2, K Burns 15, C Jarvis 14+4, M Hartshorn 13, N Venson 10+1, J Kemp 9, A Doughty 4+1)

Sheffield 80 (A Angell 17, R Hoyland 14, J Brown 13+1, B Dickenson 12, L Jamson 7+1, M Gamble 7, L Watson 4, S Tamborska 4)

Combination

The first match was very competitive but two 7-3's in heats eleven and twelve sealed the Lions fate, star of the show was maximum man Charlie Cooper but the Stars packed too much strength in depth.

Lions 61 (C Cooper 16, L Kemp 13)

Sheffield 69 (Z Smurthwaite 16+1, L Watson 13+1)

The second match featured a total of nine female riders with the Leicester top six made up entirely of the fairer sex. Both Lucy and Michelle Whitehead were unbeaten by an opponent and the Monarchs were too strong for the Stars on this occasion.

Monarchs 77 (M Whitehead 20, L Whitehead 18+2)

Sheffield 53 (V Brown 11, L Watson 9)

Report: Manchester League Individual Championships

Words: Mike Hack

Astley & Tyldesley hosted the last of the three successive Manchester League Individual Championship nights on Wednesday. 13 riders lined up for the Senior Individual Final at the smart Gin Pit circuit.

Defending champion Terry Norman started off with a win in heat 2, but narrowly lost out to Dylan Radcliffe in heat 7. This meant that Radcliffe and Chris Parish were the two unbeaten riders after heat 8 and they met in heat 10. Parish raced away to win that race, from Radcliffe, to put him on 9 points.

Norman won back to back races in heats 12 and 13, with Parish and Radcliffe both winning their next race each. Leaders after heat 16 were: Parish 16, Norman 15, Radcliffe 15. The match had built up to an exciting conclusion and Radcliffe kept up the pressure by winning heat 17.

The deciding race came in heat 18, with Parish lining up off gate 1, Norman off gate 4, with Matt Turner and Jake Read lining up off the middle gates. Parish raced away from the start and despite four laps of strong pressure from Norman, the Bury rider was fast enough to hold his lead and complete a 20 points maximum score.

Chris Parish was a deserved winner in taking his first Manchester League Senior Individual title, with some crisp gating and fast riding. Dylan Radcliffe warmed up for the forthcoming British U-16 Final on this track with a well taken 2nd place, ahead of Terry Norman, who suffered just two narrow defeats all night. These three riders dominated proceedings, but there were plenty of good performances from the rest of the field in what was a very competitive match. Curiously, both Parish and Norman recorded the fastest time of the night, 44.02 seconds, when winning heats 1 and 12 respectively.

Manchester League Senior Individual Final result
Chris Parish (Bury) 20, Dylan Radcliffe (Stockport) 19, Terry Norman (Stockport) 18, Dave Murphy (Bury) 16, Neil Howarth (Bury) 15, Jack Lush (Stockport) 14, Ben Higham (Stockport) 13, Mat Lush (Stockport) 13, Luke Jamson (Astley & Tyldesley) 13, Jake Read (Stockport) 11, Adam Phillips (Astley & Tyldesley) 10, Warren Mee (Stockport) 10, Matt Turner (Stockport) 8.

Report: South West League - Poole V Hellingly

Rarely does a visiting rider go through the card unbeaten at Harbourside in SW league matches but Neil Hollebon relished the wet conditions to notch up no less than six race wins, five of them from gate 1. Thanks to Neil, brothers Martin and Zac Parsons the Lions provided 6 of the 9 race winners before the interval but Poole took 7-3's in the other 3 heats to lead 48-41 at the interval.

With the rain falling continuously, the home side powered away to five 7-3 wins after the break with their strength in depth illustrated by their 13 bonus points. Two more league points for Poole who reinforced their place at the top of the table as they now prepare for tough matches at Newport and Exeter in the coming weeks.

Report: Kesgrave V Norwick/Norfolk Premier

Report: Glenn Grange

Still looking for a winning performance, Norwich / Norfolk Premier Coachworks ‘Stars' were the visitors to Kesgrave in the South-East League Division One on Sunday, and with Kesgrave fielding a very young and inexperienced side, The Stars managed to record a much needed win against the enthusiastic Kesgrave team.

With the Policy for 2010 being that Norwich will bring in first year and young riders for South-East League Division 1 action, this is what was carried out against Kesgrave. It was not a match to write home about as Norwich were in control from Heat 1, going on to record 6 7 - 3 maximum heat wins in the first half. Kesgrave kept battling away and even had a heat win of their own when Norwich's Barry Copping suffered a tape exclusion in Heat 8.

With the score at the interval being 33 - 56, the second half opened with Kesgrave recording two shared scoring heats (43 - 66). The rest of the half went very much the way of the first half with the visitors always being in control. For Norwich, newcomers Jason Barker and Jake Bacon warmed up for their first Finals weekend with some good performances, as Norwich finally ran out the winners by 70 - 109.

KESGRAVE PANTHERS 70
George Wiggins 8, Luke Gifkins 4, Phil Repman 11, Gary Brown 18+1, Dave Knight 8, Harry Swallow 9+1, Dan Jameson 3, Ross Knight 7+1. Supplementary Reserve: Oli Knight 2.

NORWICH / NORFOLK PREMIER CVOACHWORKS ‘STARS' 109
Lee Grange 12+4, Jason Barker 18+1, Jake Bacon 15+3, Gary Colby 8+1, Joshua Colby 14+1, Richard Hunt 11+1, Kieran Parr 13, Barry Copping 14+1. Supplementary Reserve: Danny Margitson 4+1.

In the South-East Under 16 League match that followed, a bigger, stronger Norwich side were always well in control against their Kesgrave counterparts. The Norfolk visitors took the lead in Heat 2, and never looked back. They even had the luxury of being able to give younger members of the side a run-out, but with Danni Riley in superb form, along with brother Oliver and Robert Warminger, Norwich really never looked like being beaten. They were given one or two frights by the enthusiastic young Kesgrave side along the way, but overall, Norwich managed to keep a grip on the match. The final match score was Kesgrave 79, Norwich 81.

KESGRAVE PANTHERS 79
Harry Swallow 17+1, Ross Knight 12, Oliver Knight 10+2, George Wiggins 14, Luke Gifkins 10+2, Matt Gifkins 9, Jody Howard 4, Kian Howard 3+1.

NORWICH / NORFOLK PREMIER COACHWORKS ‘STARS' 81
Joshua Colby 12, Rohan Ewbank 6, Oliver Riley 14+3, Rob Warminger 13, Danni Riley 18+1, Danny Margitson 12, Owen Wells 4, Scott Colby 2.

Report: Midlands League - Birmingham V Sandwell

Words: John Heard

Birmingham made relatively light work of thir Midland rivals at Perry Hall Park this afternoon. Sandwell arrived minus one or two of their big guns and with Phil Widdas able to call on a very strong squad it was always going to be an uphill task for the Lions.

Heat one started well though for them as Nathan Groves was excluded for movement at the tapes and the Smith brothers took advantage relegating Pete Bourgeois to third place. However with Chris Timms and recently crowned Wednesfield Olympique Champion Paul Heard in the next race the defecit was soon reduced as the pair gained the first of their three maximum wins when riding together.

The impressive Ricky Johnson caught Ben Mould napping on the last lap of the thrid race and a 7-3 ended as being a 6-4. Sandwell had their first gate exclusion in heat 4, Matt Haddock, and although Lee Smith won the re-run, Adam Lamb and Pete Bourgeois took the heat advantage and the lead was stretched to 2. Matt Smith gained his 2nd heat win next time out although Nathan Groves managed to get himself back into 3rd place despite a tumble when coming out of the first turn. Birmingham then stepped on the gas and rattled in 3 successive 7-3 wins (although heat 8 was actually a 7-2 as Lee Smith picked up the first of his two gate exclusions). Interval score Birmingham 50 Sandwell 37.

Heat 10 saw Matt Smiths third race win and another drawn heat before Birmingham put together another run of 3 7 pointers - Birmingham leading 76 to 50. Heat 14 was probably the best race of the match as the unbeaten Matt Smith rolled into grid 1 and the similarly unbeaten Paul Heard rolled into 2. Both riders gated well but it was Paul that got across his opponent and took the spoils although Matt did chase him all the way. Birmingham finished with another 3 7 pointers for a final score of 107 - 68 - both Paul Heard and Chris Timms remaining unbeaten by an opponent.

Birmingham 107:
Pete Bourgeois 16+1, Nathan Groves 11+3, Chris Timms 18+2, Paul Heard 16+4, Ben Mould 15+2, Marcus Wadhams 13+2, Adam Lamb 5, Paul Timms 13
Sandwell 68:

Lee Smith 11+1, Jack Rowley 3, Jim Palmer 9, Dave Ball 6, Phil Hemming 5+1, Ricky Johnson 11, Matt Haddock 6 Matt Smith 17.

The division 2 match saw some fine racing with the young Sandwell side doing very well to beat their more experienced Birmingham opponents. The meeting started with several drawn races before Matt Haddock and Jack Rowley took advantage of a Bob Prince slip to race away for a 7-3 win.

Natalie Timms was then excluded for clashing with Ricky Johnson and Sandwell took full advantage with Ricky Johnson and Jim Palmer relegating Phil Widdas into third place - a couple more drawn races saw Sandwell go into heat 7 29 points to 40 in front, although there were 7 points to come off thier score with David Ball riding in both matches. Heat 10 saw a fine race between Jim Palmer and Bob Prince that resulted in the Birmingham veteran biting the dust - the resultant 7-3 sewing the match up for Sandwell. Birmingham then chose to give the youngest of the Winwoods, Billy and Ryan rides although it did look more like the older guard just needing a rest!!

Final score Birmingham 55 Sandwell 74 - 7 + 67

Birmingham Phil Widdas 7, Carl Winwood 15, Natalie Timms 5+1, Andy James 9+1, Reece Winwood 6, Bob Prince 10, Ryan Winwood 1, Billy Wwinwood 2

Sandwell: Ricky Johnson 18+1, Jim Palmer 11+2, Dave Ball 14, Josh Hill 9, Matt Haddock 11+2, Jack Rowley 11+1
