Northern League

Latest Northern League Result Table

Hull 84 Edinburgh 66

3rd October 2010 | Report: Andy Brough

Hull played host to the Edinburgh Falcons on an atrociously wet day at The Hessle Raceway. Both teams needed to win to ensure at least second place in the Northern League and this was reflected in some very cut and thrust racing in the opening exchanges.

Hull began well with a 7-3 for Matt Beharrell/Ben Swanborough but the Falcons were in determined mood and dug-in for a number of drawn heats before taking a 6-4 heat win in the 5th race from Craig Newsome/Neil McPherson. Heat 6 was re-run a number of times as Matt Beharrell and Mikey Hewittson clashed on the first bend before Mikey held on for another drawn heat. The home side re-established their four point lead just before the interval through Adam Stephenson / Ian Swanborough but knew they had to keep their discipline if they wanted to win the meeting.

The second half continued in persistent rain on an increasingly boggy track but Hull's heat leader pairing of Matt Beharrell/Adam Stephenson took a maximum win in heat 10 and the home side were beginning to get on top. A 6-4 in heat 12 followed by two maximum heat wins wrapped the points up for the home side in what was a tough but entertaining meeting. Credit to both sides and referee Andy Moody for getting through the match in such demanding conditions.

Adam Stephenson was only beaten once for Hull and the Matt Beharrell/Ben Swanborough pairing was on top form but it was a good all round team performance with everyone contributing. Edinburgh relied heavily on Scottish Internationals Craig Newsome and Jake Sleight, with Mikey Hewittson always in the mix, and just ran out of steam in the closing stages.

Result

Hull 84: Adam Stephenson 18+1, Simon Plows 16+1, Matt Beharrell 15+3, Ben Swanborough 14+3, Ian Swanborough 11+1, Lewis Aylmer 9+1, Graham Storey 1, James Hunt dnr.

Edinburgh 66: Jake Sleight 17, Craig Newsome 16, Mikey Hewittson 12+1, Chris Lee 8, Neil McPherson 7+1, John Murphy 3, Mark Lee 2, Doug Morgan 1.

Combination League: Hull 83 Edinburgh 63

3rd October 2010 | Report: Andy Brough

Hull fielded a relatively fresh side while Edinburgh added team manager Steve Gilroy and Ian McKinley to their mixture of youth and experience. Hull provided the race winner for the first 12 heats to build up a healthy lead before Edinburgh's Chris Lee took heat 13. Neil McPherson and Mark Lee finished well with a 7-3 for the visitors and their first heat win of the meeting.

Ben Swanborough and Graham Storey were unbeaten for the home side with Rich Pawson only dropping one point. For Edinburgh, Neil McPherson and Mark and Chris Lee rode strongly, but all the competitors can be commended for persevering through the increasingly deteriorating conditions.

Result

Hull 83: Graham Storey 20, Ben Swanborough 19+1, Rich Pawson 18+1, James Hunt 12+1, Rob Stockton Garner 8, Katie Greaves 6.

Edinburgh 63: Chris Lee 15, Neil McPherson 13, Mark Lee 12+3, Doug Morgan 11, Ian McKinley 8+3, Steve Gilroy 4.

Astley and Tyldesley Club Individual Championships

Tuesday 28th September 2010, Gin Pit, Astley | Report: Mike Hack

Astley & Tyldesley staged the annual Club Individual Championships under the Gin Pit floodlights on Tuesday evening. As always, a flexible format was followed to cater for the age, experience and ability range of riders entering on the night. Plenty of good keen racing took place on a fast, grippy track on a crisp evening, as many of the youngsters revelled in the opportunity to demonstrate how much they have improved this season.

The u-8 and u-10 categories were combined for the first match of the evening, with 9 riders contesting 12 heats. U-10 rider Adam Turnbull raced to a 16 points maximum score and he recorded the two fastest times of the match. U-8 rider Max Evans dropped just one point, to finish on 15, with u-10 rider Ross Green scoring 14 and u-8 rider Tyler Koch next up on 13. Six year old Thomas Whitwam was the third highest scoring u-8 rider with 11 points.

Adam Turnbull (u-10) 16, Max Evans (u-8) 15, Ross Green (u-10) 14, Tyler Koch (u-8) 13, Thomas Whitwam (u-8) 11, Matthew Snell (u-8) 10, Jack Martin (u-10) 10, Charlotte Gilmore (u-10) 10, Jamie Sinclair (u-10) 9.
Referee - Bill Phillips.

The older categories were combined for the second match of the evening, with 11 riders contesting 19 heats. U-13 riders Adam Phillips and Joel Partington were impressive throughout and these two unbeaten riders clashed in heat 15. Phillips made a fast start from grid 4 to take the lead, but Partington gradually reeled him in to close the gap on the last lap. Phillips just held on to win, as both riders had to be careful to avoid a collision as they lapped Jamie Sinclair at the finish line. Both riders won their last race, as Phillips completed a 20 points maximum score to win the u-13 and Open categories, with Partington runner-up in both on 19. U-16 rider Sacha Street took third place overall with 18 points. He took an important win in heat 13 after race leader Reece Pollitt fell on the second lap. Pollitt went on to score 16 points and he defeated Stefan Whitelegg in a run-off for 3rd place in the u-13 category. U-19 rider Matthew Turnbull put in a good showing to score 15 points, the same as impressive youngster Max Evans. Fastest time was recorded by Adam Phillips, 46.18 secs in heat 17.

Leicester v Wednesfield Cancellation

Leicester's match with Wednesfield was cancelled due to a waterlogged track. Here's what Leicester's track staff reported:

"Despite having worked on the track after the deluge on Friday and emptying all the drains, a track inspection this morning found the starting grids were under 3" of water after around fourteen hours of continuous heavy rain through Saturday night and Sunday morning. The bends looked in a similar state and with the forecast promising more of the same the match was called off at 11.15. The forecast turned out to be fairly accurate, the rain finally passing through after four o'clock"

The re-staging date is Thursday 7th Oct at 19.00 and the Leicester management would like to thank Wednesfield for agreeing to re-stage the fixture so quickly.

There were twelve girl racers in the final event of the day with British Champion Rachael Edge back in winning form after her recent injury. South East League

Norwich vs East London

Report: Glenn Grange

After the nightmare of last Sunday's match against Kesgrave that was ran as the weather became wetter and wetter, sunshine spread over Eaton Park on Sunday drying out the track and providing a grippy raceway as Norwich / Norfolk Premier Coachworks took on East London in the South-East League Division 1 writes Glenn Grange.

With riders once again letting the Norwich side down with late withdrawals and Joshua Colby becoming injured whilst racing the day previous, Norwich had to call upon the newly crowned East Anglian Under 10 Champion Mason Parkins for his first team debut. The match saw the visitors take an early lead, and then first of all Norwich struck with a maximum heat win in Heat 2 (11 - 9), and then East London replied in Heat 3 with a maximum heat win of their own (14 - 16) in Heat 3. The visitors moved further ahead in Heat 5 (22 - 28), and held that 6 point lead as the first half finished with shared scoring heats. With the score at the interval 42 - 48 to East London, Norwich slowly cut into the East London lead in Heat 10 (48 - 51), and then in Heat 15 when East London's Toby Millen was excluded for 'forcing a rider over the inside line', the visitors lead was cut by another single point as Oliver Riley and Leigh Cossey scored a 5 - 4 heat win to Norwich (73 - 75). With the match going into the last three heats, Norwich levelled the match in the very next heat with a Gary Colby / Danni Riley 6 - 4 heat win (79 - 79). The home side took the lead for the first time in the match when the Grange brothers, Lee and Ian, raced to a 7 - 3 heat win (86 - 82) and with the match all on a knife edge, the visitors scored a maximum heat win to level the match, making a final match score of Norwich 89, East London 89.

The points scorers were:

NORWICH / NORFOLK PREMIER COACHWORKS ‘STARS' 89 : Lee Grange 19, Danni Riley 7, Leigh Cossey 11+1, Ian Grange 16+3, Gary Colby 17, Barry Copping 10+1, Mason Parkins 3, Oliver Riley 6.

EAST LONDON 89: Kevin Smith 7+1, Dennis Hubble 19, Dave Tulloch 10+2, Steve Woodroof 14+3, Toby Millen 10+1, Nick Gunkell 15+1, Lee Ridgwell 14+1.
