Kudu Cross - Cyclo-cross North East Round 4

Sunday 22nd November 2009 | Report: Martin Worner | Images: Kevin Tuck

Round four of the Cyclo-cross North East league was held on the Demesnes at Barnard Castle, organised by the local club Teesdale CRC. There have been races held there previously, however, it had stopped due to dog fouling issues. This having been resolved made it possible to revive the event.

Despite the heavy rain the ground was wet but not inundated, in fact there were only a few truly muddy sections around the chicanes, the course had some faster sections along the river and a staged climb up to the top thick grassed area and a greasy descent.

Paul Oldham, Hope Racing dominated the race from the start getting a lead from Steve Ward, MTS, Keith Murray, Hope Racing and Tony Fawcett NFM Racing and went on to lap the entire field. It was the chasing three that had the battle with Murray challenging Ward in the middle part of the race, Fawcett was not far away and indeed got the better of Murray on the last lap pushing Murray to fourth. In the Veterans, Barry Kipling, MTS had a clear run ahead of Steve Braizier, MTS and Richard Atkinson, Hambleton RC. William Brown, Cleveland Wheelers managed to stay clear of the crashes and rode a strong ride to win the Junior category convincingly. Pam Glover won the Ladies category with her customary style.

In the Youth race Adam Martin Active Cycles rode a very strong race putting over a minute on second rider Joe Brown, Hetton Hawks and third finisher Joe Mann, Hetton Hawks.

Thomas Mein, Hetton Hawks continued his lead on the U12s by taking the lead at the start and built a considerable time gap on the rest of the field. Miles Worner, Teesdale CRC and Jonathan Dobson, Hetton Hawks battled it out for second and third with Worner leading for most of the race only to be caught on the last lap by Dobson. Emma Brady, Hetton Hawks came in just behind and was the winning girl.

The riders enjoyed being back on the Demesnes and a number of newcomers to Cyclo-cross commented that they would definitely do more races.
