Oldham Warms Up With Impressive Win

The second round of the Yorkshire Points Cyclo-Cross Series, the John Stevenson Memorial race, took competitors to the northern end of the region and the Hambleton Leisure Centre in Northallerton. A flat and very fast course awaited over 160 competitors: winding round the perimeter of the centre's playing fields, it was, despite its dry surface and absence of climbs, a major test of bike handling, with some very tight passages through trees and endless corners.
On the start line of the Senior and Junior race, all eyes were on National contenders Paul Oldham and Stuart Wearmouth: both are regular visitors to the series and were no doubt warming up for next week's National Trophy opener in Devon. They duly surged to the front and by the end of the first lap had detached themselves from the rest of the field. Oldham then pressured Wearmouth and within a couple of laps was alone in the lead, a lead he held, and extended to the line. Wearmouth came in alone in second.
Behind them, the best battle of the day unfolded as Mark Thwaites and Tom Moses fought for third place, harried by Noel Clough. Thwaites seemed to have the measure of his rivals for a time and indeed Moses seemed more concerned by Clough who was working hard to bridge a small gap up to him in fourth place.
However, National Junior champion Moses gathered himself and shook off Clough before going after Thwaites. Thwaites kept his cool and although Moses caught and briefly passed him, he had a little bit left in the tank and re-took third and held it to the line as Moses paid for his chasing efforts.

The Veterans' and Women's race saw another impressive win for Matt Denby. With the course riding very quickly and with several narrow pinch points, it was imperative that you got a good start and both Denby and Zepnat team-mate Jonathan Watson are masters at this and they soon headed the race.
Dave Stevens, the previous week's runner-up didn't get away so well and was never able to put himself into a position to pressure the leaders and came in 6th. Up front Denby rode clear to claim the win with Watson second. Both will be looking to make a big impression at the National Trophy in Devon next week. Lynn Bland was the first woman home.

In the Youth race, Joseph Moses gained revenge for his last-gasp defeat by Ed McParland in the previous round, riding away to win alone. Matthew Walls of Eastlands Velo made the most of his trip over from the NW to claim the Under-12 race, with Sophie Thackery the first girl to finish in 10th.

The series now takes a break until the 4th October, when it visits Sheffield for the Graves Park event. Please note, this event has swapped dates with the Jonathan Noble Cross at Temple Newsome, which now takes place on 8th November. For those riders not making the long trip down to Devon next weekend, there's a non-series event at Newsome High School in Huddersfield on Sunday 20 September.
