Cambridge-based Hayden Wood was first across the line in the Eastern Team Championships, staged at King Edward VI School in Bury St Edmunds.
The 32-year-old crossed the line almost three minutes ahead of PCA Ciclos Uno rival Andrew Nichols, gaining some revenge for being beaten by Nichols to the Eastern League title this season.
Overall, Colchester Rovers were the winners with their best placed finisher being James Jobber, 18 and from Wivenhoe in Essex, while Greg Andrews was their second best finisher in tenth spot in the senior race.
Wood, who is based in Cambridge, was riding unattached and purely for his own benefit, but would’ve taken some satisfaction from his performance.
Beating rival Andrew Nichols would’ve been his aim, but to do so by almost three minutes and lap all but five of his rivals in the senior field would’ve sent him home with a smile on his face.
“I got a reasonably good start,” said Wood. “I like racing when it’s cold and hard, and it was quite bumpy today. The course was really good – they had some nice banks and off-camber sections.
“Andrew Nichols usually wins, but I got away from him and pushed it hard for the first five laps, and I was checking the gaps a lot to see where he was. The only times I’ve won in the Eastern League he’s not been riding, so I knew he was strong.
“Although this race wasn’t part of the League, I still wanted to turn up and race hard, and see people get their awards.
“Next for me, I’ll take a month off and then get back to some road racing and mountain biking – I usually do the Eastern Mud Sweat and Gears League.”
