Location: Knockburn Loch, Aberdeenshire
Event: 21 October 2012
Report: Mark Tandy/Snowdon Sports

Event three of the Scottish Cyclo-Cross Series took place on Deeside at the purpose built Knockburn Sporting Loch.

Glorious blue skies and unseasonal temperatures were the back drop to a fantastic day. Over 200 riders came up for the only series event to be held in the North East of Scotland and conditions did not disappoint.

The main event of the day, the Senior Men's Race was an outstanding show of speed and skill. The familiar sight of an early break from series leader Rob Friel (XCracer.com) was a constant through the race and he went on to win ahead of David Lines (Pedal Power/Endura/Forme) in second place and Colin May (Velo Club Edinburgh) in third.

The largest field of the day was in the junior, women and veterans race with well over 100 riders lining up at the start.

Leslie Bike Shop made a clean sweep in the men's veterans race with Gary McCrae leading the way almost from the very beginning.

The dry conditions and rising temperature fuelled a very fast race. The women's competition was more closely contested with favourite Ruth Fraser-Moodie (Pedal Power) putting up a strong fight against Morven Brown (Dales Cycles) and Mona Petrie (Deeside Thistle CC) snapping hard at her heels all the way to the finish line.

The skill and determination of the young riders in the under 10 and under 12 races was outstanding. Calum Reid (Wallace Warriors) made an early impression and was chased hard by Keir Robb (unattached) and Anthony Hay (Deeside Thistle CC).

The girl’s race was no less impressive and young Anna Shackley from Glasgow Riders came in first ahead of Anna Flynn (Edinburgh Road Club) and Rhona Samphier (Wallace Warriors). The youth race saw 27 riders line up for the second event of the day.

The organisers wish to thank all those who travelled to Aberdeenshire and look forward to welcoming the series back in 2013.
