Former British under-23 mountain bike champion David Fletcher cruised to victory in the first round of the Yorkshire Points in Bradford on Sunday, crossing the line two minutes ahead of Orange Monkey team mate Billy Harding.
The pace was electric from the very first lap with five riders getting away and opening up a 17 second lead.
Fletcher didn’t let up the furious pace and he kept increasing the gap with each lap that passed. By the end of the race he had lapped everyone up to eighth.
Ian Taylor (Jedi Cycle Sport) had already ridden in and won the veterans race but was faring well. He managed to keep pace with Fletcher for much of the race but eventually tired and fell away to fight for second place with Harding.
The final part of the race took in some bunny hops and whilst Taylor decided to dismount to negotiate them, Harding stayed on his bike and this saw the Bradford man get the advantage over the veteran.
But Taylor still did well to get a podium finish having already competed in the veterans race, which he won with ease. After a strong summer season which saw him win the summer series, Taylor has picked up where he left off.
From the start, it was Taylor and team mate Noel Clough who got away early, opening up a 20 second lead.
But halfway through the race, Clough’s chain came off and put an end to his challenge, with him eventually finishing down in sixth. Chris Young (Pedalsport Cycling Club) was second and in third it was Andrew Peace (Jedi Cycle Sport).
