AFTER settling for second in the previous week’s North West League race at Clitheroe, Giles Drake (Herbalife-Leisure Lakes RT) returned to the top of the podium when he secured a confident victory in round four, promoted by Weavey Valley CC at Greenbank Playing Fields in Northwich.
The 29-year-old from Wirral was around 40 seconds ahead of his nearest rival at the end of a mainly grassed course, which had suffered from the rain and become heavily muddy.
Drake finished second to Scott UK strong man Dieter Droger the previous week, but he notched up his second win of the series following his victory in round two to strengthen his lead at the top of the overall standings after four North West League race.
The early pace was set by Matt Lawton (Macclesfield Wheelers), but Drake took over on the second lap and gradually pulled out a lead. CS Pendle’s Martin Woffindin took third spot, and was fastest Under-23 rider.
“It was a good race, and it’s always good to get the win,” said Drake afterwards. “It was very slippy. Not particularly wet mud, but cloggy stuff which is slippy and like an ice rink.
“I wasn’t taking many risks, whereas I think Matt was really pushing in on the corners. I eased round them but put the hammer down on the straights. I was disappointed after last week when I was second, so it’s good to win again.
“My form seems pretty good, so I may ride a few of the local National Trophy races, although I won’t be going all the way down to Southampton. If my form holds through that I may also do the National Championships, but that’s a long way off yet.”
Fourth spot went to junior Robert Rogers (Birkenhead North End CC), while the supporting race for veterans and women was won by veteran Pete Middleton (Zepnat.com) from Adrian Lawrence (Team Elite).
Rebecca Preece (Contessa Scott-Syncros) was fastest woman, while the youth race was won by Adam Hartley (Velocity).
