Location: Stover, Newton Abbot
Event: 20 October 2013
Report: Ben Goddard/Snowdon Sports
Dexter Hurlock (Mondraker UK) took a fine solo victory by more than four minutes in the South West Championships which was also round five of the South West Cyclo-Cross League.
Stover School played host to the event which was played out on their school grounds which led to a fairly flat course which although muddy led to some fast racing.
Mountain bike expert Hurlock, aged 23 and from Saltash, took control of the race from the outset and never looked back to take the title by a clear four minute margin.
Speaking after the race Hurlock said: “I got a bad start as my foot slipped so found myself five or six riders back.
“Due to the mud flicking up into my eyes I wanted to ride it from the front so worked hard to get there.
“Once at the front I was able to set my own tempo and my mountain bike background seemed to work well for me as I built up a big lead.
“I am using cyclo-cross as training for next season’s mountain bike races so I will just ride local events.”
This is Hurlock’s second cyclo-cross victory of the season after also winning the Bodmin Cyclo-Cross in September to add to his eight mountain bike victories this season.
Coming home to take second place was Tim Carpenter (3 Sixty Performance RT), in third place was Pete Dawes and first female home was 17-year-old Lucy Allan (Fully Sussed).
In the youth race Harry Birchill (Mid Devon CC) was victorious and in the novice female race Heather Fell was the winner.
