Davie Lines (MG-Maxifuel) made it three wins in a row in the Scottish Cyclo-cross League after winning a showdown with opponent Rab Wardell.
Wardell set off at lightning pace and although Lines tried to keep close to him, he eventually had to let go and watch him ride off into the distance.
But as the race wore on, Line continued to put in consistently quick lap times and with three laps to go, he caught up with Wardell.
The two men were well ahead of the chasing pack by now and entered into a game of cat and mouse, putting in attacks for the remainder of the contest.
Then on the final lap, Lines countered a Wardell attack and managed to hold him off to take first place, 14 seconds ahead of Wardell. Paul Newnham (Team Leslie Bike Shop) was next over the line, more than a minute behind.
Lines said after the race: “That’s three in a row now, which is excellent with the Scottish Championships just around the corner.
“Rab went hard from the start and he’s been doing a lot, I knew he’d be strong. I hung on for a lap then I had to let him go. But I kept plodding away, got my legs and caught up with him.
“On the last lap, I countered his attacked after the climb and he looked gassed. I got a bit of a gap after and held on. Rab is a class act, he beat every time last year and won the champs. But I felt really strong today.
“It’s a good course for me at the champs. I’ve kept a lot of road stuff going this year, kept those skills there. It’s also helped to keep my endurance strong through the race to get consistent laps. The championship is one I’ve wanted for a long time now.”
