About the Hill Climb

High Hill is a 1km climb on the edge of Rottingdean with stunning views in every direction across the South Downs and out to sea. Riders are set off at 1 minute intervals and the fastest to the top in each age category is the winner!

The climb is perfectly achievable by young riders. Parents can ride alongside or behind (but NOT in front), provided they do not impede other riders or get in the way of spectators!

Getting to the course

'High Hill' is on Bazehill Road, entered from Falmer Road on the northern edge of Rottindean village. Continue for about 1 mile where there is car parking in the field at the summit of the hill, please follow the marshal's directions at the top.

Directions on Google Maps

Obviously we would encourage competitors to cycle to this event. Rottingdean is easy to cycle to from Brighton & Hove in the West, and Saltdean in the East, using the seafront NCN2 cycle route. There is also a largely traffic free route all the way from Lewes along NCN20 to Falmer then the Falmer-Woodindean cycle track followed by the Old Parish Lane cycle track down to Rottingdean village.

On the day

The cycle course is on the northern side of the hill, which will be closed to traffic.

All riders must have a bike with working brakes. Helmets are compulsory for riders and please bring a water bottle. You may need weather-appropriate clothing, the hilltop is quite exposed with no shelter!

  • 10.00 Sign-on at summit.
  • From 10.15 Riders escorted to bottom of hill in small groups. Older riders may make their own way down.
  • 10.30 First rider off.
  • 11.30 Presentations

South Downs Hill Climb Series

Riders who are aged 12+ will have further opportunities to compete throughout Autumn in the South Downs Hill Climb Series, which features Steyning Bostal, Ditching Beacon, Firle Bostal and more. However the Rottingdean Hill Climb is the only one that allows U12s to compete and is the only dedicated youth event in the South Downs Hill Climb series.
