Clayton Spring Classic Handicap 2025

Road , Clitheroe – Sunday, 23 Feb 2025

Event Summary

Event Overview

Formerly the Clayton Velo Spring Classic - typically the Northern season-opener celebrating its 57th running in 2025.

Handicap format for all categories with E/1 as scratch group. 15 laps of the small Bashall Eaves 3.9 mile circuit.

Past winners are a who's who of Elite British cycling.

2024 saw Saint Piran's Tyler Hannay win from Logan Maclean and Tom Martin.

Whilst start and finish for the race are different the Strava segment 'Edisford to Edisford lap' shows the full lap. Start is adjacent to the layby 400m after the first left of this segment. Course rolls gently with four left turns, two of which  are slow, one fairly fast and one which requires no slowing on entry to the finishing straight. Roads are frequently used by farm traffic but Accredited Marshals and NEG riders are familiar with this.

Former winner Si Wilson set the lap record on 29/07/2020 in 7 minutes 48 seconds during a time trial on the circuit.

CLOSING DATE 10/02/25

** acceptance criteria will aim to accommodate the highest quality field. If oversubscribed the selection will be based on timing of entry (ENTER EARLY) with the intention of achieving a good mix of handicap groups. Reserves are most likely to come from the 3/4 pool and will be numbered based on date of entry. Any reserve choosing not to retain their reserve spot will be refunded if withdrawal communication is received more that 48h in advance of the event. Any 'no show' reserves on the day will not be refunded. 2024 reserve list at closing date had 17 riders of which 15 got a ride!

Info for Riders

Handicap format - Group One (W/J3/4/3) start before Group Two (2) and finally Scratch Group (E/1) with handicap timings announced on the day to take conditions and field into account. Entries will be confirmed at the discretion of the organiser to ensure a mix of category entrants. Entries after the closing date may be considered if spaces remain but at a £10.00 premium to standard entry cost (call it a disorganisation tax, charged as the late Jason Iddon suggested "because I'm worth it" when challenged).
