David Stone took a superb silver in the men’s T1-2 road race, his second podium finish of the Rio Games and sixth Paralympic medal.

His team mates Hannah Dines and Megan Giglia also competed in the road races and finished fifth and seventh respectively.

Stone, after a brilliant bronze medal in the T1-2 time trial on Wednesday, was back in action in the men’s T1-2 road race.

The British rider passed through the halfway check point in a leading group of five riders, including both of his fellow medallists from the time trial, Hans-Peter Durst and Ryan Boyle.

Germany’s Durst overcame a mechanical issue to snatch the victory by three seconds over the British rider and take his second gold medal of the Games.

Stone said after the race: “I’m delighted with that result; it was always going to be a difficult race.

“This was just a warm up for Tokyo – off we go again!”

Megan Giglia

In the women’s C1-2-3 race, Giglia led a group of seven riders through the first lap in 45:21 and was looking strong as they headed for the second circuit.

The leading pack also contained gold and silver medallists from the road time trial, Alyda Norbruis of the Netherlands and Denise Schindler from Germany.

The race finished in a thrilling three-way sprint between Schindler, the USA’s Jamie Whitmore and time trial bronze medallist Sini Zeng, with Whitmore clinching the title.

Giglia finished in seventh place, just 26 seconds behind the winner and said she was happy with all her performances in Rio.

“It was a good race and a great learning experience for me.

“I was so pleased to win a gold on the track and I've had a great first Paralympic Games.

“I can go away from this whole experience with a lot of lessons learned and I'll look to come back stronger.”

Hannah Dines

Hannah Dines made her Paralympic T1-2 road race debut and made an impressive start, passing the halfway point in a leading group of five riders.
