Great Britain Cycling Team’s Tre Whyte and Kyle Evans exited in the quarter-finals at the fourth round of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in Rock Hill, USA.
Whyte and Evans progressed from the motos on Saturday night but were unable to finish in the top four of their respective quarter-finals and missed out on the semi-finals in South Carolina.
Junior Bethany Shriever rode well in the elite women’s event but fifth in the motos was one place short of reaching the semi-final knockout stage.
American Corban Sharrah and Dutch rider Laura Smulders won the men’s and women’s events respectively.
Quarter-final frustration for Whyte and Evans
Second, fourth and third across three motos put 22-year-old Whyte through his heat in third overall, as the top four progressed.
And in a quarter-final featuring Tory Nyhaug and Twan van Gendt, Whyte started well, third after the opening straight.
But after missing a jump on the second straight Whyte’s race was effectively over and he crossed the line in seventh.
It was a similar story for Evans. A fourth and two-third places put Evans through his moto and into a quarter-final that included David Graf and Sylvain Andre.
Evans, 23, was in the mix for a top-four place but missed out by two-tenths of a second behind Dave van der Burg, taking fifth over the line.
Evans remains 10th overall in the series.
Shriever gains experience
Bethany Shriever, in only her second UCI BMX Supercross World Cup, came desperately close to making the semi-finals.
Fifth in the opening two runs of three left the 17-year-old with work to do in the final heat.
A superb second place behind American Brooke Crain took Shriever to 12 points, just one away from Judy Baauw’s 11 which saw the Dutch rider take the fourth and final qualifying spot from the heat.
The British trio now head to Sarasota for the final round of the world cup from 9-10 October.
