Great Britain Cycling Team’s Tre Whyte was fifth at the final UCI BMX Supercross World Cup of 2016 in Sarasota.

A slow start out of the gate cost the 22-year-old but there were plenty of positives for Whyte to take after a strong day of racing saw him reach his first world cup final of the season.

Kyle Evans exited in the quarter-finals of the elite men’s event while junior Bethany Shriever continued her impressive year by reaching the semi-finals of the elite women’s event.

Corben Sharrah won his third world cup of the season to secure the overall men’s title while Laura Smulders won her third consecutive world cup race as she was crowned women’s champion.

Season best for Whyte

A second place and two wins put Whyte through the motos, following on from on his three consecutive victories in Saturday’s qualifying.

A fantastic victory in his quarter-final was followed up by third in the semi-final to book a spot in the final eight.

But a slow start out of gate three saw Whyte fall out of contention for the podium and he crossed the line in fifth.

Kyle Evans racing at the Sarasota UCI BMX Supercross World Cup

Kyle Evans exited the quarter-finals for a second consecutive world cup after last week’s Rock Hill round.

Just one-tenth of a second separated third to fifth but the Rio Olympian Evans took the latter position with only the top four moving on to the semi-finals.

Shriever completes first UCI BMX Supercross World Cup

Seventeen-year-old Bethany Shriever completed her first world cup season with an impressive performance to reach the semi-finals of the elite women’s event.

Shriever took a second, third and fourth in her three motos to reach the final 16 but drew a heat that included Smulders and Brooke Crain.

There she put in a strong lap but sixth brought an end to her afternoon and an encouraging first season of supercross racing.
