Great Britain Cycling Team’s Craig Collis-McCann was forced to retire in the men’s T2 road race at the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships.

The British rider - who finished sixth in the time trial on Thursday - was unable to finish the race in South Africa after his trike sustained damage in a collision.

A fellow rider in the peloton crashed into Collis-McCann in the opening laps, with the impact bending his trike's bump bar into the wheel, causing significant damage making it impossible for him to continue.

It was a cruel end to a debut world championships for Collis-McCann who went into the road race full of confidence following silver and gold medals at world cup rounds this season.

Gold went to Germany's Hans-Peter Durst, who pipped New Zealand's Stephen Hills to the win on the line by just a second.

Joan Reinoso Figuerola was a further nine seconds back to take bronze.

The remaining eight members of the Great Britain Cycling Team will take to the streets of Pietermaritzburg for their road races on Sunday.
