Track Stars of the Future in Newport (Wales)
Story posted December 22 | by Larry Hickmott
Three different development programmes from the Great Britain Cycling team came together in Newport (Wales) last weekend for a Development World Cup on the velodrome there. Running a similar format to the World Cup held twelve months earlier at the same venue, the best young riders from around Britain competed in coach led races over two of the planned three days. The third day was cancelled due to the problems on the roads with the snow falling over the country.
Each day, riders from the Olympic Talent Team, Olympic Development (ODP) and Olympic Academy would be driven to the velodrome to compete in Olympic events such as the Team Sprint and Sprint as well as the Omnium for the endurance riders. The competition also included guest riders who are not currently on any of the GB development programmes.
As well as the racing, the riders would be also getting feedback from their coaches who were track side to encourage and evaluate their performances. British Cycling was also trackside and photos from the second day can be seen in the slideshow below:
One of the coaches looking after his riders in Newport was Darren Tudor who has been the Olympic Development Programme (Endurance) coach for four years now and seen a number of his riders go on to win Junior European and World titles. Asked about the importance of such an event, he replied “When you look at the amount of racing available to them in the Olympic disciplines, there isn’t really anything like this over the winter.”
“We are going to do another one in March because the Juniors only probably get to race in a proper competition probably once or twice a year in team pursuiting. So this gives them the opportunity to do that. Certainly for the Academy lads, this is a great opportunity with the Beijing World Cup in a months time as it gives them a run out in the pursuting.”
“Like Sam Harrison has done a great PB today (4.26) and without this, we wouldn’t have known that as we don’t generally run over the full distance in training so there have been many positives to come out of this camp. Like for the ODP endurance riders, most of them are first year juniors (only one remains from the previous year, Owain Doull. If you looked at the times of the riders, some of them are respectable, some of them maybe not so good but that is our starting point now and we can go forward and build on it.”
Features on each of the development programmes will be posted on the British Cycling website in the coming weeks.
