Anna's Profile
Despite coming late to cycling, Anna Morris has flourished on the track in recent years, and is part of the reigning women’s team pursuit world champion squad. She hopes to be selected for the 2024 Olympic Games and continue to achieve in Paris and beyond.
Anna Morris began cycling at university, joining the Southampton University cycling club while she was studying for a degree in medicine and developing rapidly into a top level athlete.
During the covid-19 lockdown Morris worked on the frontline of the NHS alongside colleagues in A&E before deciding to take time out from her medical career to focus full-time on her dream of cycling success. She began by testing herself at the British National Track Championships in Newport, where she proved herself beyond a doubt, working on her bunch racing and taking medals in the scratch race (silver) and points race (bronze) and further enhancing her skills against the clock in the individual pursuit, in which she came away with silver following a gold-medal ride-off against current team pursuit teammate Neah Evans.
She achieved selection for the Welsh squad at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, competing in five different events across the track and road. Her rapid rise earned her selection for the national squad, and she joined the team heading for the UCI Track World Championships in Paris in October 2022. Here, she had an immediate impact as part of the silver medal-winning team of Evans, Katie Archibald, Meg Barker and Josie Knight, taking home the first elite championship medal of her cycling career.
It began a period of great success for Morris as part of the team pursuit set-up. The squad foreshadowed a big year ahead with gold at the UEC European Championships in Grenchen, Switzerland, adding a bronze in Jakarta at the UCI Track Nations Cup a few weeks later. But the big goal of the year was the 2023 UCI Track World Championships in Glasgow, and as part of a team comprising Archibald, Knight, Meg Barker and Elinor Barker, Morris became a gold medallist and world champion, as the team scored their first victory in the event in nine years.
On the road too Morris was able to prove her speed against the clock, winning a silver medal at the National Road Championships individual time-trial in the same year.
It’s been a positive start to 2024, looking ahead to the Paris Olympics, with a number of achievements already in the pursuit of final selection to the Olympic squad. Team pursuit silver medals at the UEC European Championships in Apeldoorn, Netherlands and at the UCI Track Nations Cup in Adelaide, Australia underscore the form of the reigning world champions, and a bronze medal in Apeldoorn in the individual pursuit puts Morris firmly in line for consideration for Paris.
