Blaine's Profile
Men’s C5 para track sprinter and three-time world champion Blaine Hunt took up cycling in 2017 and made his Paralympic debut at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, taking home a silver medal.
As a teenager, during what should have been a routine knee surgery, Blaine faced a life-altering event, sustaining nerve damage to his right leg due to a surgical mishap. This resulted in problems with his mobility in that leg, including a limited range of motion in the ankle joint. Hunt became eligible to compete as a para cyclist as a result of his injuries, and he joined the Great Britain Cycling Team in March 2021.
Hunt competed in his first UCI Para Track World Championships in 2017 in Rio, and it was a hugely successful debut, seeing him claim a Bronze in the C5 1km time-trial – or ‘kilo’ – event.
That sought-after world title finally came in at the UCI Para-Track World Championships in Paris in 2022, where Blaine also set the world record for the C5 flying 200m as part of the Paris Track World Championship omnium.
Hunt has successfully defended his title in the kilo twice, first at the 2023 championships in Glasgow, and again in 2024 in Rio de Janeiro, in an early competition that set up expectations for the Paralympics this summer. Hunt claimed two more medals at the event, riding to silver in the mixed team sprint with Jaco van Gass, Kadeena Cox and Jody Cundy. He also succeeded in completing a full set of medals, with bronze in the C5 omnium, his best result in the combined event to date.
Selected for his debut Paralympic Games, Hunt returned to the place he won his first world title to try and claim his first Paralympic medal. In the men’s C4-5 1km time-trial, Hunt set a blistering qualifying time of 1:02.005, finishing in second just ahead of defending champion Alfonso Llamas Cabello. The final saw him back up his ride with an impressive 1:001.776 time, just 0.126 seconds behind Australia’s Korey Boddington to give him his first Paralympic medal; a silver.
Prior to his professional cycling career, Hunt worked in the television industry, covering major sporting events such as the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and Champions League for major UK broadcasters. He still works periodically for Reuters news agency. Now, in addition to his own competitive racing, Blaine is a qualified British Cycling track coach and founder of his own coaching business.
