Fred's Profile

Fred Wright was destined for a life on two wheels, and grew up riding at the famous Herne Hill Velodrome in south London. Concentrating on track riding in his junior years, Wright has combined disciplines but remains primarily focused on the road.

Currently a pro road member of the Great Britain Cycling Team, Wright rides for the WorldTour team Bahrain-Victorious.

He began his road career with promising signs of his potential, winning the Junior Tour of Wales in 2016 ahead of some of the biggest names in British cycling currently, including Tom Pidcock, Ethan Hayter and Jake Stewart.

He underscored his potential over the following few years, winning a number of Belgian kermesses and achieving in smaller stage races, before taking stages wins in both the marquee espoirs races the Giro Next Gen and the Tour de l’Avenir in 2019.

In the covid-affected year of 2020, Wright rode his first season as a pro, signing a five-year contract with Bahrain-Victorious and though he was without a win that year, he raced and completed his first Grand Tour, the Vuelta a España. In 2021, he participated in his first Tour de France and later that year came second in the road race at the British National Road Championships.

In 2022 he showed his strength in the spring Classics, recording his first Monument top ten, finishing seventh at the Tour of Flanders. He went on to post extraordinary performances at both the Tour de France and Vuelta a España, picking up four top 10s at the Tour and eight at the Vuelta, making the podium five times, including placing second in the points competition at the Vuelta. He also competed for Great Britain at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, winning a silver medal in the individual time-trial. In a standout season, Wright proved both his strength and his consistency, but remained without that elusive win.

That win finally came in 2023, when he took gold in the road race at the National Road Championships in Cleveland, conquering Saltburn Bank to take an emotional victory, and win the right the wear the national champions jersey for a year. The win followed another strong showing at the Tour of Flanders in the spring, with a second top ten finish. So far in 2024, Wright has ridden a busy programme on the road, including a full set of spring Classics, with his best result 12th position in the ‘Hell of the North,’ Paris-Roubaix.

Wright has continued to come back to GBCT as part of the track programme over the past few years, picking up some notable results. At the UCI Track World Cup in London in 2018, Wright picked up silver in the Madison with his partner Matt Walls, and bronze in the team pursuit riding alongside Ethan Hayter, Will Tidball and Ethan Vernon. He and Walls claimed gold in the Madison at the UEC Under-23 / Junior Track European Championships in Gent the following year, before he claimed another Madison medal at the UCI Track World Cup, Hong Kong, this time a bronze, with partner Mark Stewart.

Most recently, Wright competed on the track at the UEC European Championships in Grenchen, Switzerland, in 2023. Though there had been some suggestion Wright may make a return to the track in a bid to qualify for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, Wright insists he is fully committed to his career on the road, as he aims to secure one of four spots in the team for the Olympic road race.
