George's Profile
A relative newcomer to the world of para-cycling, Peasgood is a remarkably versatile athlete who will represent Great Britain in both triathlon and cycling at the Tokyo Paralympics.
It will be Peasgood’s second Paralympics, after he finished seventh in the PTS5 classification of the triathlon competition at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro.
His talent on a bike had long been apparent, from his triathlon exploits, by the time he was first selected to represent Great Britain in para-cycling in 2018.
But a fifth place in the individual time trial and seventh in the road race in that year’s UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships in Maniago, Italy underlined the great, untapped potential he had in the sport.
That was even more apparent in a remarkable spell in June 2021, which started when the Essex-born athlete won the time trial at the British National Championships.
A few days later, he was in action at the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships in Cascais, Portugal, where he not only became a world champion in the individual time trial event buit added a silver in the road race, losing narrowly to Patrik Kuril of Slovakia. That was enough to earn Peasgood his place in Tokyo, where he will ride in the time trial and road race events in the C4 category while also chasing a medal in the triathlon.
Peasgood suffered a traumatic injury to his left leg at the age of two, undergoing a number of surgeries, and starting triathlon after a leg-lengthening operation in 2009, at the age of 14.
By 2013, he was competing seriously in the sport and won his first major medal, a bronze at the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in London before going on to become one of the youngest competitors in the Rio Paralympics triathlon event.
Peasgood clearly gained from the experience and has remained a contender in international events ever since, the best results of his career to date coming in 2018 when he won the ITU World Series events in Yokohama, Japan and Iseo-Franciacorta, Italy, in addition to the World Cup in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Now based in Loughborough, Peasgood has strong family connections with elite level triathlon. Brother Jack represented Great Britain age group teams in triathlon and duathlon while Jack’s wife Alison will join him as part of the ParalympicGB team in the Tokyo triathlon. In addition, both parents have competed Ironman triathlons.
