Joe's Profile

Joe Truman is a true sprint all-rounder, participating in the individual and team sprint events, keirin and kilo, during the course of his career, picking up European, world championship, world cup and Commonwealth medals along the way.

Truman began racing his bike with Portsmouth Cycling Club as a child, but he first came to prominence at international level in the summer of 2016, winning team sprint gold at the UEC Junior and Under-23 Track European Championships in Aigle, Switzerland alongside Jack Carlin and the Olympic-bound Ryan Owens.. He also claimed bronze in the 1km time-trial.

It was the beginning of a fruitful career on the track, in both individual and team sprint events. Truman earned selection for the elite UEC European Track Championships in France that October, where the trio of him, Carlin and Owens won silver in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines at their first ever senior European championships.

The 2016/17 UCI Track Cycling World Cup was next up for the trio, and spurred on by the home crowd, the British riders won gold at the season opener in Glasgow, adding another a week later at the second round in Apeldoorn.

All three were all selected for their first elite UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Hong Kong in April 2017, taking a respectable fifth place in the team sprint by less than two-hundredths of a second.

As the 2017/18 world cup season got underway, Truman earned another medal, winning bronze in the team sprint with Carlin and Owens in the season opener in Pruszkow, Poland before taking a fourth place finish in the team sprint in Manchester.

At his second world championships in Apeldoorn in 2018, Truman won his first UCI Track Cycling World Championships medal, picking up silver as part of a five-man team sprint squad alongside Jason Kenny, Phil Hindes, Carlin and Owens.

The following month, Truman was selected for his first-ever Commonwealth Games, lining up alongside Hindes and Owens in the team sprint - with the trio winning silver in Australia.Following that, Truman spent two years at Japan's keirin school, honing his craft and competing on the keirin circuit, and he featured in the BBC documentary “The Secret World of Japanese Keirin Racing” during his time in Japan.

Truman missed out on a place in the Tokyo Olympic squad in 2021 due to a back injury which hampered him for over two years. He was back on track in in 2022 though, earning  a call-up to England’s squad for his second Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where as part of a sprint team that also included Owens and Hamish Turnbull, he won a silver medal. He suffered a setback in the keirin though, being knocked unconscious following a crash. The accident resulted in a broken collarbone and concussion and forced him to miss the kilo and sprint events, and he faced a long recovery period to return to form.

In 2023, Truman narrowly missed out on a medal at the UCI World Championships in Glasgow in the kilo event, and later in the year he took part in the UCI Champions League event in order to try and improve his competitive level to challenge for a place in the team that will represent Great Britain at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he is intent on competing in all the sprint events, both team and individual.
