Cycling is a fantastic addition to the curriculum and with a few simple steps your school could soon offer inclusive cycle coaching to pupils, encouraging a healthy lifestyle, active learning and physical literacy.

Whether youngsters aspire to become the next Laura Kenny, Geraint Thomas or Quillan Isidore – or simply need support in getting active and riding confidently, your local British Cycling development team can provide all that’s needed to introduce cycling to your current physical education provision.

All that’s required is a large flat space to coach on and a member of school staff to deliver as a qualified coach. Cycing can be appropriate for all students, helping to inspire physical achievement and personal motivation.

Beyond these coaching sessions schools can help you to instil cycling and its health benefits within your school, through staff training, a young volunteer programme and the School Games.

Cycle coaching for schools

Our Cycling for Schools course is perfect for your staff to have the knowledge they will need to deliver grassroots cycling and coaching skills to the pupils in your school.

The qualification enables employees and volunteers aged 18 and over to provide cycling activities within a school environment, building on the enthusiasm created by the coaching sessions.

School Cycling Clubs

Schools can become affiliated British Cycling clubs. We encourage schools to explore the feasibility of setting up their own cycling club to offer regular cycling activities. On completion of the affiliation, the club will have full access to the same benefits as any other British Cycling Club.

A school club provides an opportunity for young people to get involved in all aspects of cycling, be that developing riding skills, racing or volunteering. British Cycling clubs team can provide support as you take the necessary steps to create a club, which can run either as an after-school activity or as part of your physical education curriculum.

School Games

The School Games are a national events from the Youth Sport Trust, designed to help schools provide more opportunities for pupils to thrive and succeed in sport. Through a programme of intra- and inter-school competitions, the initiative is a proven environment to enthuse young riders and highlight champions of the future.

British Cycling Go-Ride Racing

Go-Ride Racing is a British Cycling programme that provides young riders with a chance to experience entry-level competition in a friendly and controlled environment alongside their peers. As an affliated British Cycling club you can attend and deliver Go-Ride Racing activities.
