Sutton Cycling Club Nets Club of the Year award!

Posted: 25 November 2009

When Sutton Cycling Club /De Ver Cycles decided to celebrate its 10th Birthday all year long with a series of Birthday Specials, they didn't expect to receive an additional special birthday present, but they have been named Sutton Sports Club of the Year!

At the presentation evening for the Sutton Sports Awards on 10th November, 6 young members went up on stage with the Club Secretary to be presented with the award by the Mayor of Sutton, Councillor Margaret Court, and later on they cheered when Nick Woolven, one of the club's Coaches, was Highly Commended in the Sports Coach of the Year category.

Sutton Cycling Club/De Ver Cycles is a junior club, the only adults being parents, Coaches and Officials. As well as its programme for existing members, the club offers "Come & Try It" sessions for newcomers at community events. It promotes races, and encourages members to race, both internally and in open competition. As membership continues to grow, so does the coaching team, both in numbers and skills. The emphasis is on enjoyment and it is this that makes the young riders come back week after week, in all weathers, and tell their friends what a great club it is.

The Club has had a number of successful riders in its short history - notably two national champions in the Club colours. Some former members have gone on to win national titles and to represent Great Britain. Of these, we are particularly proud of Joanna Rowsell, who won the 2009 World Championship in the Women's Team Pursuit, following wins in the same event in the 2008 European and World Championships.

Club Chairman Peter Fordham, who was there for the presentation, said later:

"As one of its founders, I was particularly delighted that the club has won the Sutton Sports Club of the Year award. Our success as a club is down to the dedication, week in, week out, of all our volunteers - coaches, leaders and officials. Earlier this year we inaugurated a scheme to acknowledge their contribution, and this award is further recognition of their efforts. It was also good to see one of our coaches, Nick Woolven, highly commended in the Coach of the Year category. I'd like to thank Sutton Sports Council for its support of the Club over the years, particularly in respect of the Sutton Primary Schools Cycling Championships. I must add that I was impressed to see how many active and successful young sportspeople there are in the Borough."

The Sutton Sports Awards are organised and sponsored by the London Borough of Sutton Sports Council. As the Sutton Squad for the London Youth Games is also sponsored by Sutton Sports Council, the presentation evening is a combined event celebrating the Sports Awards and the achievements of the Borough's team for the Games.

In this year's London Youth Games the Sutton Squad achieved overall 8th place out of the 33 London boroughs. The Cycling Team, managed for the Borough by Coach Nick Woolven and all members of Sutton CC/De Ver Cycles, were featured in the video of the event that opened the evening's proceedings and received an honourable mention. The Junior Team of Jack Haining, Oliver Greenwood, Tom Wadsworth & Aidan Woolven (all except Jack young enough to have been in the Juvenile Team) came 6th and the Juvenile Team of Andrew Bradshaw, Jack Wills and Dylan Wymer came 7th. The combined position of the teams was 8th, earning a valuable 73 points towards the Borough's overall total.
