Over the past four weeks, Welsh Cycling in partnership with Limar Helmets, have successfully held eight virtual events for existing members and to those who were new to cycling.
The series welcomed everyone, from 8-year-olds to 60+ and whilst events are still not up and running due to the Coronavirus pandemic, we wanted to help quench the competitive thirst our riders had by introducing a new way of racing right from the comfort of their own home.
Rhys James, Welsh Cycling’s Events Officer, said: “It was amazing to see over 80 cyclists across 22 cycling clubs sign-up to the series, and the enagagement we reached was greater than we had hoped for. Having joined in the events myself, it certainly did give that competitive element to riders, and it’s something we’d definitely look to be doing again.”
With their eyes peeled on winning the Welsh Air Speed Limar Helmet, the events ranged across a varied of different virtual worlds; from Yorkshire to New York, London to the mountains of Watopia, each event offered riders with different challenges.
Three riders completed all eight events, and Wendy James (one of those three), said: “These past four weeks have given me an introduction to racing and it gave me a goal to follow. I found myself enjoying competing against people I didn’t know each week, and seeing those Welsh & British flags next to the names of riders certainly made me push that bit harder. Welsh Cycling have done a great job in organising the series and I thoroughly enjoyed it.”
The more events riders took part in, the greater their chance of getting their hands on a very unique and Welsh inspired designed helmet for them to wear out in the real world.
Jason Killiner of Pontypool RCC has been officially drawn out as the winner of the Welsh Air Speed Limar Helmet, he said: “I do a lot of racing on Zwift and to do something that’s localised with a lot of riders who I compete out on the roads and circuit on was great. It was very competitive and there was a good range of courses that Welsh Cycling offered as well, from flat sprinty-type events to more hilly ones. I was due a new helmet so I’m amazed to have won.”
Massive congratulations to Jason and to each and every one who competed within the series. Thanks to Limar Helmets for providing the series with the helemt. Finally, a big thanks goes to everyone who supported the series as without the riders there, it wouldn’t have been as successful. We'll hopefully see you all soon again in the virtual world, and in the real world when time allows.
