Exmoor Explorer
Date: 2nd August 2009
The ride takes place on the first Sunday of August each year and comprises of a 'short' (approximately 25 Miles) route and a longer (approximately 35 Miles) more challenging route. The routes change every year but always takes place over the challenging but spectacular landscape of Exmoor and most of the mileage is done on off-road tracks, bridleways, byways and with permission from land owners.
Both routes feature the infamous 'Tea Stop' where riders can get an energy boost from flapjack and energy bars and is a good place for spectating. There are also several checkpoints along the way so you can rest and get filled up with liquid!
The course is kept secret until a week before the event. It is then published on the event website as a map and as a download for your GPS. On the day the route is marked, so finding your way is very easy. The extra 10 miles is an additional "out and back" route from the Tea stop. This is technically much harder than the main 25 mile loop.
This is a long distance Mountain Bike challenge and not a race. It's a great opportunity to ride with 400 or so other nutters, enjoy some fantastic countryside and contribute towards the upkeep of Exmoor's public rights of way (a proportion of your entry fee is donated to the Exmoor Paths Fund). Camping is free so come down and make a weekend of it!
