Imperial Winter Series Race 2
12th December 2009 | Week 1 | Thanks to Lucy Collins
After the teething problems with the first race of the series last week, almost inevitable with an event that has become so popular and successful, a slightly reduced entry in the races saw some spirited races. The format was maintained on the basis that the first week was not likely to be a true reflection of successive weeks.
The 4th category race was started 50 seconds in front of the 3rd cat race and the distance and time remained much the same for the entire event until the 4th category race finished after 45 minutes. It was won with a very strong finish by young Twickenham CC rider, Alex Pantelides, from local Hillingdon Slipstreamer Dan Maslin. Alex will now move up to the 3rd cat race and should have no trouble staying with the pace.
As soon as the 4th cat race finished, two primes in the 3rd category race were contested kindly donated by Stuart Stow of Annapurna clothing. This first prime was won by Mick McManus (RT 316) and the second by Luke Ollett (Inverse Racing/Bike Food). Sadly the finish was marred by a crash on the s-curves with 200 metres to go. Fortunately, there was not too much damage to person or machine but poor riding seemed to be the cause. William Platt (Kingston Wheelers) won holding off Alan Strang (Dulwich Paragon) and Nathan Smith (London Phoenix).
In the E/1/2/3 race with an entry of over 50 riders, last weeks winner Steve Golla (Sigma Sport) and Arjan Planting (Affinity) were active from the start. However, Golla seemed to be struggling and when joined by his team mate Phil Sykes, he sacrificed his position to leave Sykes alone in the lead after having dropped Mick Hill (Team Quest).
Mark Edwards (Hillingdon Triathletes), Felix English (Team Pearson Cycles), John Heaton-Armstrong (Fit-For) and Henry Furniss (WyndyMilla) were joined by Jason Streather (VC St Raphael) in the chasing break. Heaton-Armstrong and Edwards rode strongly together but made no impression on the outstanding lone break by Phil Sykes.
It was thrilling to watch with Sykes adding a few seconds each lap to create an unassailable lead in the face of a chasing group, particularly with a strong breeze on the run in to the finish. Sykes’s victory owed much to his team mate Steve Golla for initially policing the main group but allowing the break to escape which could have been detrimental if Sykes had not been so strong. The sprint for the main group was lead in by Jo Skelton (Brixton Cycles) who held off Oliver Rossi (Corridori CC).
Generally it was a good afternoon’s racing and entertainment. The organisation hope that it takes a similar pattern for the rest of the series with all the riders listening and adhering to the commissaire’s instructions on the start line.
