Rider Diary: Tracy Moseley
Interview with Tracy Moseley - September 2009

Britain's most established female downhiller, Tracy Moseley has been racing at the highest level for 15 years and is one of the only gravity racers to have won a round of both the downhill and fourcross World Cup, alongside multiple national titles and the prestigeous UCI Downhill Mountain Bike World Cup in 2006. With only the rainbow stripes elluding the Malvern-based rider, 2010 and Mont St. Anne would be an apt counterpoint to Steve Peat's astonishing World Championship title in 2009. Coaching, dressing up and downhilling

I think I am growing older faster writing this diary as a month seems to fly by, I can't imagine how fast it's going to feel when I actually start racing and I am away lots! February proved that winter was still not over, as we had a load more snow to ride in. I feel my snow riding has improved loads this winter and if I do the mega avalanche in the summer I might be a bit better at the snow section this time!

Along with riding XC in the snow I have also started riding a lot more downhill over the last few weeks which has been great fun. It's been quite good having a break from my DH bike as I feel pretty excited to be riding it now. I did a couple of uplift days with the Pearce Cycles guys and some playing at home in the woods. I also did a girls training session with five girls down at the Forest of Dean. It's great to see more and more girls enthusiastic about racing downhill.

I have always been interested in coaching and encouraging people into the sport as it's given me so much pleasure so I like to share the opportunities that cycling can bring. I did a three day course to become a Bikeability instructor which is basically the new cycling proficiency test. It's something I would like to get involved in during the off season and when I retire from racing. Not only can you make kids safer cycling on the roads but you can also get them excited about cycling, I'm looking forward to getting more involved later in the year.

February is also the month for the annual awards dinner at British Cycling. I always enjoy going to these events, having an excuse to dress up! This year it was a big do as it was the 50th anniversary of British Cycling and they started a new BC Hall of Fame. It was great to learn a little about the history of BC and get to see many of the great riders and volunteers of the last 50 years get inducted into the hall of fame. I especially enjoyed getting the chance to meet up with the late Jason McCroy's parents.

Jason was one of the first downhill riders to go out and race successfully in the US and had a great career ahead of him before he was sadly killed in a motorbike accident. His parents set up the Jason McCroy fund to help fund young riders to get experience racing abroad. I had funding from them for my first trip abroad to race and I am really grateful that they gave me a stepping stone to the future I have since had with the sport, so it was great to see them and tell them all about what I have been doing since then.

So yeah, a busy month with lots of riding and training and even a trip to the Velodrome at Newport which was great fun. Hope the sun comes out soon as I can't wait for some dry trails!!
